About RAST scores...do lower results mean DS is growing out of some of his allergies?

DS had RAST tests at the hospital when he was about 14 months. He is now 3 years old has just been tested again.

Milk is down from 80-something to 12.1
Egg is down from 60-something to 12.9
Hazelnuts, brazil nuts and almonds are all now under 2.0

However, he did have raised results to some other foods, and the consultant says we should carry on avoiding all these foods just as before.

I know that RAST results aren't necessarily a good indicator of how severe a reaction is likely to be, but I can't help being just a little bit excited about milk, eggs and nuts... Or are his IgE levels dropping simply because he hasn't been exposed to these foods?

Weirdly, his result for wheat was 6.17 - even though he eats bread, pasta, biscuits and noodles etc. almost every day with no problems at all.

I find it all very confusing. I have always told myself (and DS!) that he is highly unlikely to grow out of his allergies, and we have concentrated on building up coping strategies instead of indulging in false hope. But now I am starting to wonder...

I'm pretty sure they're not dropping just because he hasn't been exposed to them as my DS's RAST results have been going up and he hasn't accidently ingested any of the things he's allergic to. Our consultant said that if his RAST and skin prick results come down for any of his allergens then they will consider doing food challenge so it must be at least be an indicator that things are improving even if it's not that reliable. He also said that wheat was one of the least accurate allergy tests but don't know why.

Thank you freefrommum - that's helpful. I know that with scores of 12ish, DS is still a long way from a food challenge, but it does sound like things might be improving a bit and it is not just me being foolishly hopeful. It is so confusing! The consultant's letter that came with these scores said she was "disappointed that we are no further forward with DS's allergies and it does not look like he is growing out of them at the moment" - but my unscientific instinct is that a lower score has surely got to be a good thing.

I'm so sorry to hear your DS's RAST scores are going up though Sad
