suspect nappies

My wee boy has had pooh problems for a while going from constapation as a small baby to very loose, smelly nappies now. He is dairy intolerant reacting to even small traces of dairy products and so doesnt have this in his diet any longer. What would be the next most probably culprit, or do some little ones just have dodgy bottoms? I am thinking soy milk might be the problem. Has anyone tried rice milk and is this ok for a 17mths old? I thought maybe corn or raisins too as when he eats these the nappies seem particularly bad? Is this possible to react to?
Lots of questions, please give advice.

wheat is a common cause of ibs, could be that. Soy is a common allergen but I think, not sure, its more likely to cause rashes than digestive problems. Rice milk is low in nutrients, you need to make sure the rest of the diet is very good if using that. Milk gets everywhere as skimmed milk powder, casein or whey so my first thought would be to double check any foods, then to try probiotics.

If you still have any gripe water that contains lactase which can help with problems caused by milk intolerance. We've not generally found it very useful in preventing problems but it did seem to help shorten the duration after accidental milk ingestion - we had lactase tablets, not gripe water but the principle is the same.

thank you for reply. Very careful with the milk as he react to very small amount in bread and all sorts of foods. Look at all labels now. He is on probiotics and flax oil after reading about them on here. he has tests for wheat which was ok but just for allergy not for intolerance. do I try take this out? DO I try take out small traces or just main wheat sources?

it isn't just looking at labels, though - do you have any dairy in the house? We do and I have to be careful not to use the same knives for butter and milk free margarine or to spill milk and have any on my hands.

I'm reluctant to suggest avoiding a food group without professional advice. Also the mention of corn (which is sweet) and raisins suggests maybe a problem with sugar? I'd try lactase/ reducing sugar intake first, no harm in having less sugar.

no we dont have milk in house either or cheese or the rest as if we have it he want it too so best to just eat what he does.
Will try cut down on sugar and where is gripe water with lactase from? Health food store or chemist? He doesnt seem to have a milk sugar issue we told it was to the protein in the milk that makes him be so sick with it.
So not normal to have loose nappies is it? I didnt think so.

gripe water comes from a chemist or supermarket selling baby items. Lactase can be bought as tablets in a few food stores but not many. It is easier to get on the net but you can get hold of gripe water faster.

Loose nappies in babies aren't unusual, it depends on how loose and how often whether it's a problem or not. He may just need more fibre in his diet. Corn and raisins aren't common allergens, although its possible to react to anything, but they are both high in sugar.

Although I'm trying to help really think professional advice is needed if the nappies are really bad.

They ask for sample and then say no bugs so maybe food. They say cant test for tolerance just try and see. He only has a soil once or twice a day sometime very loose but not like water and always very smell. Could maybe the sugar do this? I cut this down today but he not have much really but the sugar in fruit and stuff. Not added to his meals. I think maybe not an allergy but not to tolerate something well makes him have a sore tummy and bad poohs. Thank you for your idea of gripe water, I will try this, is this nice for them or could it be a battle to get him to try some. How long to try before I may notice that he is getting better? Thank you for all your ideas, know you are not a doctor but sometimes mums have better advice than them!!

gripe water doesn't taste too bad, lots of babies have it with no problem. If the problem is milk I'd expect him to seem more settled within a few hours.

Ask for a referral to a consultant allergist if it goes on and it that will take ages a dietician. You may have to try excluding wheat but you need good advice on alternatives.
