Very dark circles under my eyes (regardless of how much sleep has been had)
Eczema on my wrists and arms
Constipation to varying degrees-when it's bad there's blood and it's v painful
Bloating
Tiredness (I've always needed more sleep than average-10+ hours is ideal but I obviously rarely get it)

I've never thought about them as linked at all but I've recently been on a diet and as a side effect have eaten a lot less wheat than normal. I've also eaten less meat-not sure if that could affect it? They've all improved to some degree and I'm now wondering whether I'm intolerant to wheat. My GP would sneer at me if I asked to be tested. Can you self diagnose by cutting out/re-introducing foods or is that not going to be accurate?

Eyes, eczema and tiredness, yes.

I have always suffered with eczema, when I'm tired it's worse. When the eczema is worse my eyes get sore and dark circles get darker. When that happens, it drains me completely.

I'm afraid I don't know the cause behind it, but I see the same in our 3 year old. When she has a bad nights sleep her eczema flares up.

I know it isn't a help but I wanted to say yep...it can definitely be linked.

Hm, that's interesting, thanks. I wonder if it's related to wheat or whether it's just an annoying fact of life!

I don't know about the wheat. I do think it's all related to pollen this time of year though, the tree pollen gets me.

VickityBoo · 29/03/2012 16:35

I often think that tiredness is related to eczema because the body is working hard to cure/relieve the eczema whilst also creating the nasty histamine and therefore working harder. It may be nonsense but it's my theory.

Definite link between coeliac disease and eczema. Ask Dr Google. I had eczema as a baby, two coeliac children (although without eczema - one allergic to almost everything else!) , autoimmune thyroid disease - coeliac makes you tired, don;t absorb nutrients, dark circles under eyes classic allergy symptom whether autoimmune or not. Go and insist on a blood test for coeliac disease. Bloating and constipation also classic symptoms of coeliac.

Good luck.

Gosh-ok. Don't know much about coeliac disease-will do a bit of research and then make an appt. If it's not full blown coeliac but an intolerace would that show up on the blood test or not? Thanks for your help :)

I was also going to say definitely go to see GP if passing blood and was also going to suggest getting tested for coeliac disease. As far as I know, there isn't a test for gluten intolerance although I seem to remember someone on here talking about a stool sample test but can't remember exactly what that was for. As itshotintexas says, your syptoms definitely fit with coeliac disease.

Kaloobear · 31/03/2012 11:21

I've been researching coeliac disease and from the list of potential symptoms in addition to the above I also-

Have had a miscarriage
Have had periods of depression
Am anaemic
Bruise really easily
Am very irritable
Get stomach cramps after eating
Sudden and unexplained problems with my teeth

I've been to the GP about most of these at some point over the years but never put them together. I know he'll be sceptical if I turn up with a list of symptoms-he makes me feel like a hypochondriac even when I'm bleeding/have a temperature of 103! I think I should go though.

Here's a link to the NICE guidelines on recognition and assessment of coeliac disease (just in case your GP is reluctant to test you): publications.nice.org.uk/coeliac-disease-cg86/guidance

Thanks freefrommum that's really useful. (And I can now add hair loss to my list. Great!!)
