Best sun cream for baby with bad eczema? And ones to avoid?

Obviously I'll cover nearly all his skin in light clothing to avoid suncream application. But come the summer, his face will be exposed.

What suncream is best for sensitive skin? I dont mind paying more.

Ultrasun, only needs once a day application, which is very good with a little one and is waterproof.

MegBusset · 21/03/2012 17:53

The Eczema Society website has a list of suncreams which are free from the most common irritants - will see if I can find a link. We use Banana Boat spf50 (pink bottle).

do you need to use suncream on a clothing covered baby though? With a good sun hat on? A little exposure to the sun is a good thing. Perhaps you don't need it at all?

WhiteTrash · 21/03/2012 18:02

Yes he'll be toddling about, come summer. His face wont be in the shade all the time. Thanks for the fact sheet thats great.

We use Ultrasun if going to be out for a decent length of time. Can buy from jojomamanbebe and they often have 15 or 20% off promotions. Lasts all day and extremely effective. I carry around Nivea sun kids spray for out and about, and sun is strong and we're out for more than 30 mins or so in it. As HipHop said, a little exposure to Vit D is good for them. Both of mine have eczema, one more severe than the other.

It's trial and error when it comes to eczema and suncream unfortunately as each child's skin reacts to different things. I've often found that one suncream seems ok for a few weeks then starts to cause problems, making DS's eczema flare up, leaving him itchy and blotchy. So far, the best one we've found is SunSensitive 50+ by Australian brand SunSense (listed on Eczema Society factsheet) - you can get it online but it's pretty expensive and, as I said, just because it works for my DS doesn't mean it will for yours. We chose it because it doesn't contain chemical blockers/perfume etc so less likely to cause a reaction.

avoid soltan like the plague.

QZ · 21/03/2012 20:14

Green people organic has been best for us (ds has horrific eczema)
Best of all is long sleeves, long light trousers, hat

BlueBumedFly · 26/03/2012 13:43

The only one DD can tolerate is Proderm Mousse. Its really great and goes on quite dry so no sticky child, meaning less chance of heat rash too.

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 29/03/2012 02:24

Sun sense toddler milk.

chillyigloo · 12/04/2012 22:20

Sunsense toddler milk or sunsense sunsensitive are both great. DD is 5 now and from birth to 4 this was the only one that didn't drive her eczema wild. Now she's at school and I need to apply suncream in the morning that will last 6 hours I've bought ultrasun sensitive spf50 to try if when the weather warms up. Her dermatologist tells me most eczema sufferes are ok with it so fingers crossed.

(I second the avoidance of Soltan)

chillyigloo · 12/04/2012 22:22

Oh - she was ok with sun mousse too (formerly proderm).

Some that are water repellant really dry and irritate the skin.

AylaFriendly · 19/06/2012 09:48

Ergo Suncreen - an Aussie Brand. We get on prescription as DD is allergic. Might be worth considering as loads of suncreams have milk in!

While Im here...

Hello all,

I just wanted to tell you a little about myself and a new blog I have started dealing with allergies and eczema.

www.allergies-eczema-and-children.co.uk/

My four year old daughter has suffered with bad eczema for most of her little life. So bad we have been known to bathe her in the middle of the night to calm her down. After getting no where at our GPs I decided to research and two years ago I eliminated wheat and dairy from her diet.

Well I am not a Doctor but the results are amazing!!! Her skin is under control and she is thriving....and we even get a few full nights sleep these days.

So the blog is just about what we do, good Ayla Friendly recipes tried and tested by a 4 year old (but that we can all enjoy!!) and also about the stresses of eczema. So take a look, join in and pass on if you think it might help someone!!

x

We've tried loads on our DD and so far Ultrasun has been the best.

It is quite expensive but as you only apply it once a day it's worth it and once opened it lasts 36 months. I'm sure this will save us some money too as the number of times we've chucked shop bought ones after a year as they start to smell odd.

If you do go for this, then see if you can get it from QVC. They offer a 30 day money back warranty so if you find it doesn't work, send it back and they'll refund you the cost of the item. Not the P&P but it'll be alot cheaper than buying it from John Lewis or Waitrose say and then finding you can't use it. I'm a bit sad but often get things I'm not sure about from them.
