White Fish Allergy

My DD had a reaction to some thing she ate a few months ago and broke out in hives all over her body. She had a blood test done which came back negative to white fish so today she went for a challenge test. I was convinced that she would be ok but when they spread a little fish under her lip it became very red within 5 minutes so the test was halted and she was given 5ml of Piriton. How often does the blood test prove wrong? Where do we go from here? Have any of your DC's grown out of a fish allergy. She eats Tuna and Salmon ok but I am now worried whether there could be a cross contamination issue. Are there any foods that white fish crops in that I wouldn't expect. She is only 2 at the moment and doesn't go anywhere without me but is due to start playschool in the autumn. Should I be sending her with only her own snacks etc.

Any help/ advice please.

My oldest son was allergic to the cheese they used in McDonalds and I avoided it for a couple of years and he grew out of it. Then my youngest son had a severe allergy to milk was put on soya milk only to get an allergy to that also! I thought bugger this, he was soo skinny and hardly eating, knew it had been a year since he had milk put him back on it and he was fine. My advice to you is this, at this age avoid the food they are allergic to, ie all fish! Give their wee body a chance to adjust for example 1 year, in this time avoid all fish, then reintroduce after a year and the body will have probably stopped rejecting it. When children are very young they become sensitive to things easily but thankfully grow out of it just as fast if you avoid that group for a while. Hope this helped :)

WeeKirkie, while it is great news that your dc's outgrew their allergies, the advice you give is potentially dangerous. While it is true that children can outgrow, no allergist worth their salt would recommend a home challenge to a food that a patient is known to be allergic to, certainly not without prior testing to establish whether the allergy is still likely to be present. In the op's case, where her dd's blood test showed a negative result yet she still had a reaction, I think it would be especially important to challenge under supervision.

Op, I'm afraid I don't know anything about fish allergy, but I know there are mums on here with experience of their dc's reacting to foods they have tested negative to, and of dc's with fish allergy. I'm sure they will be able to give you some good advice. Also, if your dd has been challenged in hospital, does that mean you are under the care of an allergist or paed? Is there someone at the hospital that you can call who might be able to help with your concerns? I know when we went to our first appt my head was all over the place and I didn't ask half the questions I wanted to - however, I was given numbers for a nurse and a dietician who I was able to contact later once the dust had settled.

Good luck Smile
