DS2 has always been particular about his food, for seemingly no reason at all about 4 months ago his eye swelled up, we took him to the GP as it looked like the white of his eye was going to burst it was so swollen.
The GP said it lokked like an allergic reaction, but we went through everything and there was nothing new in the kitchen.

I make cakes for a living, and that day DS2 and I had been making buns (for us), so in the kitchen we had been touching flour, eggs, sugar, butter, vanilla essence.

then No reactions at all. about 3 weeks ago we had a bought curry sauce, within a minute of DS2 eating his first bit his lips blistered and he said his throat hurt. We took away the curry and he just had plain rice.

Tried a different curry sauce a week later same reaction
Then a couple of days ago, we had a GU chocolate pudding (that we had to cook)
it was exactly the same, his lips and throat sore and blistered.

Now, I am going to go to the GP, but what is going on? He is nearly 6, has eaten flour and eggs in cooking for the last 6 years, can't imagine it is sugar

Help! What do we ask the GP to do?

hmm, no don't have the containers but do know what they were.

We don't have ready meals most of the time I cook from scratch, the things (aside from his eye) are connected to premade stuff bought in, I wondered if it could be a preservative or something.

Go onto Tesco, Sainsburys or similar bring up the item and compare ingredients. What curry was it exactly?

WhiteTrash · 15/03/2012 09:54

I just looked at GU c.pudding and the two things that jumped out at me was Potassium Sorbate (preservative) and soya lechtin.

Does the curry have either or both of those things?

Pataks Pasanda
Water, Cream (13%), Onion, Yogurt (7%), Coconut Cream (5%), Ground Peanuts (4%), Modified Maize Starch, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Spices (Contains Mustard), Sliced Almonds, Salt, Ginger, Garlic, Concentrated Tomato Purée, Lactic Acid, Cardamom, Citric Acid, Colour: Paprika Extract.
This was one of them... Hmm no Soya or Potassium Sorbate.

Are you sure it wasn't the peanuts or almonds? Did the GU choc pud say 'may contain nuts'? Just thinking that these are the most likely culprits in an older child who's never shown any signs of allergies before.

Nomoremrtumble · 15/03/2012 15:59

Don't forget it could be more than one thing he is reacting to. Dd is allergic to mustard (often in curry) and apparently this allergy is on the rise.

trixymalixy · 16/03/2012 13:07

Unfortunately allergies can arise at any time to foods that have been eaten many times before.

The best thing to do is keep a food diary so you can try and pin down what it is, and make sure you have piriton available.

ChocaMum · 18/03/2012 23:10

I agree with freefrom. As I was reading your post the thing that seemed most likely to be the common allergen is nuts to me. So so many things have nuts or traces of nuts in it, and your DS being 6 is still a common age to develop an allergy at.

ChocaMum · 20/03/2012 08:58

Also our dietician told us that a large number of 'fussy eaters' actually have allergies and thats why they avoid certain foods.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 20/03/2012 19:12

really interesting Choca, We have an appointment with GP Monday but I guess that won't give us anything other than a referral. We have Bupa through DH's work so if I need to wave that card to get things moving I will.
