Just wanted to get some opinions from you on something that happened this evening. As some of you may know, ds has had postive spt to egg and cashews. We know he is egg allergic as I have seen him have a skin reaction to egg white. He has never had cashews.

Tonight we had a Tesco pizza for dinner. Sunblush tomato, mozzarella etc. No nuts in factory, none in recipe etc etc. No egg either. He's not big on stuff like bread and butter, sandwiches etc and i usually give him a slice of pizza which he either looks at in disdain and chucks straight on the floor, or he eats the cheese and then chucks it! Last Saturday we had a little first birthday party for him where he also had a slice of the same sort of pizza. I noticed a small mark at the side of his mouth that I thought was a hive developing, and he was generally red-faced but I put it down to the fact that he was stuffing himself with Quavers and tomatoes and strong cheddar and just flushed. I told myself not to be paranoid but gave him some Piriton anyway Blush and didn't really think anything more of it.

Tonight, he just put the pizza in his mouth and then chucked it, didn't really eat any of it. I didn't really think about it until I saw a mark appearing in exactly the same place as last week. It looked like he had scratched himself, a long raised line, longer than last week. I didn't notice this until a good 5 or 10 minutes after the pizza had been chucked, just kept an eye on it as he had again eaten a load of little tomatoes (he would live on them if he could!) and carried on with dinner. Because it was in the same place I thought he was again getting a bit flushed because of all the tomato. He didn't seem bothered by it, no scratching or eye-rubbing (and he is the king of random eye-rubbing at meal times which drives me potty trying to decide if he is having a reaction to something Hmm so I think if it had been bothering him he would have been scratching it) He then ate some yoghurt but started to have a bit of a meltdown because he wanted the bowl so I took it away took him up to the bathroom to clean his face.

I couldn't find a clean flannel upstairs so I got a baby wipe and ran it under the tap to wipe his cheeks. The cheek on the side where the 'scratch' was went red and a small hive appeared at the top of his cheekbone. Just one, but enough for me to put 2 and 2 together to make 5! I gave him Piriton, the small hive almost disappeared within about ten mins, but the 'scratch' was still evident. This was a good ten minutes more after he had had the pizza, so about 20 mins altogether.

I should add that ds does occasionally get random hives, often when eating, which will just appear in ones or twos and never seem to bother him. They go as quickly as they appear, usually within about ten to fifteen mins, and we were told by the specialist when we saw him that they are a totally separate thing from his food allergies. I usually ignore them now although they frightened the lift out of me when I thought he was reacting to everything under the sun...

He is a massive eater of tomatoes, although tonight he did have a lot more than he usually does, and I have only ever seen this mark on the two occasions I have described. He has been a bit rashy around his face anyway lately as he tends to chew his coat which then sits wet against his skin whenever we are out. I had stopped using babywipes on his face and started protecting him with barrier cream when out and when eating and it had started to clear up nicely.

So I guess what I would like your opinions on is would a hive reaction be more random in where it appeared, rather than in the exact same place every time? And would it also look the same, ie the line shape, both times? Seems a bit odd to me...Also, the pizza contained milk, wheat and gluten all of which ds eats all day every day with no ill effects, so I am at a loss really as to what he could be reacting to if he is reacting? It's basically a pizza base with tomato, mozarella and parmesan on top. I don't give him a piece with sunblush toms on as I think they may be a bit highly flavoured for him at the moment. And wouldn't a reaction appear at the point of contact ie around his mouth - pretty much straight away, rather than at the top of his cheek? Am I making something out of nothing - is it just coincidence that his rash is aggravated by loads of tomato and he gets a random hive on his cheek, or am I right to worry?

All the info I have read on here, I seem to be a bloody allergy expert until something happens to ds when I go to pieces and feel as though I know nothing after all! I will try to make a profile with a picture on to show you what I mean. The scratch shape looks really prominent on the photo because I used the flash but actually it was much less obvious at the time. I took it approx 15 mins after giving Piriton.

Apologies for the rambling length of this post - I always try to keep it short and always fail!

Can't believe what a long post I wrote, sorry! Have added a pic and just checked on ds. You can still see what looks like a long scratch on his cheek. Maybe I'm just mega-paranoid?

well, their skin is more sensitive, honestly i would run my finger down my sons leg and a hivey line would come up!

also, if son ate at the table and the window was open, sometimes he would hive on that side of face exposed to window. this was tree pollen or hay fever allergy.

my son cant eat raw tomatos, and when younger had pretty hive/flushing / itchy reaction to tinnned , cooked tomatos in food.

it took until 5 to be able to eat tinned tomatos. cant eat raw or foods high in histamine.

cant eat honey, on bread/toast when younger , again due to pollen overload.

so, apart from all that, havent been at all useful. sorry.

Hi eragon, thanks for taking the time to read. There is still a faint scratch mark on ds's cheek this morning, so I think it was probably just coincidence. He has had scratches in the past that have come up like that, but I am so paranoid around food that I am always looking for a reaction...Between the two kids coughing, teething etc etc I have had about 3 hours sleep over the past two nights so I think it's starting to get to me Confused

Ironically, if I ate tomatoes when ds was younger he would react through my breastmilk with dreadful stomach pains and horrible mucousy nappies, but now he would live on tomatoes if I let him! I'll keep an eye on it, but hopefully it's just me overthinking things. Again!

This is interesting. Haven't read all your post, but something similar happens to DS when he eats baked beans. Because he's confirmed allergic to lentils, peas and chickpeas I'm particularly paranoid about other pulses, but I stopped worrying so much when I realised it wasn't hives, but red marks in exactly the same places on his face every time. I now put it down to skin sensitivity because he doesn't seem to have any other allergic reaction and I'd go completely insane if he couldn't eat baked beans on top of everything else he can't eat!

Thanks for talking me down guys, I couldn't get back on due to our newfangled super-fast broadband actually being about 100 times slower than our old perfectly adequate broadband Hmm

Ds eats tomatoes every day, just not in such quantities as he did on the two occasions he had this rash. I guess next time we eat pizza I'll have to keep a close eye on him and then I can work out if it's that or tomato overload...God knows what I'd do if he had an actual reaction, I'm already a paranoid wreck!

My dd gets hives when eating raw tomatoes all around her mouth, while she gets smaller ones with cooked tomatoes or with ketchup. Like BB said its a fairly common reaction so I still give them to her. Tomatoe sauces are pretty much essential for so many things I cook her so not prepared to give them up unless she reacts badly like she has with the foods I have excluded from her diet. HTH.
