ds did a cooked egg challenge today and he isn't allergic !!!

He became slightly nauseous after the last bit of fairy cake but nothing came of it.He still had a positive reaction to raw egg but he'll probably outgrow that

This is such fantastic news...he can have birthday cake...wow!

Anybody else wondering -go for the clinical trial in cambridge ,it was definately wotrth the 3 hr drive and back!!

That is very good news! We're having some food challenges done next week. I hope we get the same result!

brimfull · 31/01/2006 19:47

what challenges are you having NASWM?

Egg and soya (although not at the same time!) DS2 is currently dairy, egg and soya free. He is not strictly 'allergic' though, his problme is reflux related and different foods agravate it.

NB We're not going to Cambridge - but it sounds like a good trip!

congratulations. can you explain wot the challenge involves, my ds 15months and all tests came back neg for dairy, soya, egg, (he hasnt had any since 4months old) but hes so obviously allergic/intolerant to them

brimfull · 31/01/2006 21:25

It's basically getting them to eat a fairy cake with egg on it.They started by doing basic pulse etc, then rubbed a small bit of cake on inner lip, then if no reaction gave him 1/32 of a fairy cake to eat.The after 10 min intervals and no serious reaction the piece of cake gradually increased until he'd eaten the whole thing. He also had skin prick tests and a blood test. His chest and pulse and blood 02 were monitored throughout.Ds became slightly off colour ( thought he may throw up) but after about 10 mins he was fine.

I don't know if they do the challenge if you've had a neg skin test.Ds previously has had a pos skin test for egg.

I haven't got the details to contact them but tatt started a thread a few days ago which has the details, look on the allergy topic area ,sorry. The trial is ongoing for a few more yrs

i think my ds is prob more intolerance then, he can eat something and between 6-12 hours later hes in agony with belly ache and screams for hours, its just awful

brimfull · 31/01/2006 21:45

might be worth an email to see if testing is beneficial for your ds.They're really approachable.Has he had allergy testing already for egg?

OP posts:
7777777 · 31/01/2006 21:49

he had a food mix test which apparently includes egg which came back negative. ive found out on threads on here tho that you have to have the bad foods in you to show positive, hes had nothing but chicken, ham, gluten free bread, baby jars and veg since 4months old so they might not have tested correctly?

mum made him cake just with egg and no flour (incase gluten) we gave him a tiny bit and he was up literally all night inconsolable, very frustrating as you know

brimfull · 31/01/2006 22:01

has he ever ahd a skin reaction (rash, hives) from being touched by raw egg?

OP posts:
7777777 · 31/01/2006 22:06

no, ive never put raw egg on him. hes had hives for penicillin and other medicines

brimfull · 31/01/2006 22:08

sounds a bloody nightmare ,sorry don't know if this woiuld help, you could give them a call and see.

brimfull · 31/01/2006 23:45

sorry rubbish at links

tatt · 01/02/2006 08:12

oh that's great news ggirl. Are they keeping in touch to test him for raw egg later and see if he outgrows that too? With nuts if you outgrow it you have to keep eating them or it can come back - good excuse to eat loads of cakes. 77s skin prick tests will work if you've ever eaten the food if it's a true allergy and I was told by the technicians the blood tests work even if you haven't. However digestive problems are intolerances (not caused by IgE) and the tests work only on IgE. If you can get a referral to a consultant allergist they would probably do a food challenge instead.

Even if the cambridge people can't help you they'd possibly be able to tell you who to see more locally.

7777777 · 01/02/2006 09:52

hi tatt, do you grow out of intolerances then or are they for life do you know?sorry to be a pain, it was the ige blood test he had that showed negative and the cealiac one aswell as the food mix one, all negative

tatt · 01/02/2006 11:14

77s I'm not an expert. I can say that some do, especially milk as that's often outgrown by 3 or 4 and some haven't outgrown other intolerances as adults (in my family). I'm a major fan of probiotics for helping kids outgrow allergies though. Really think its where you need to see a specialist. If you're anywhere near Cambridge I'd speak to them and see if they'll include someone who hasn't tested positive.

brimfull · 01/02/2006 12:07

yes tatt,he said to come back anytime for testing with raw egg.

Thing is they mix it with milk or soya milk which I know ds wouldn't drink eventhough they make it yummy flavours.Ds hates milk and nilky things.Dr Clark said he could possibly mix it with oj which ds loves but it would probably taste disgusting.

Anyway we'll see if we can get ds into milky drinks and see how that goes.

Am off to buy something with egg cooked in it,this is really going to make birthday parties much easier
