Hiya mums , hope the babies are snoozing away, anyway i have a question, some might find it odd but im gono go for it,,I have a thing about germs and i am very clean when it comes to the children ,one of my daughters gets viruses quick and it hits her chest big time when she gets a flu etc, anyhow what has this got to do with nappy changing ,,,i know ill get to the point,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I saw my childminder change my baby daughters nappy on a mat using gloves, she wiped her bum and then placed her bum directly onto the mat then she used the same gloves with which she cleaned her poo to put her nappy on and then she put another baby bottom on the same mat,,,,,,with cleaning it?????does this constitute hygenically cleaning or should i tell her to wash her hands wipe the mat and then clean next child ,,,plus she used the same gloves without washing her hands to change next baby,,,then she took off and im concerend as she didnt throw these away,,,now as she is a family freind i dont want to go over this if its just me being extra clean......over the top im worried about nurseries as well what do they do ,,i wash my babies and daughters hand faces when they come back cant risk it .....

i think it sounds fine!
the gloves are for HER safety... polio can be transmitted through poo!

starsq · 30/01/2006 22:18

oh no i know that but what i mean is that if u clean one child bum --poo etc and then not wash ur hand pick nxt child take her nappy off etc......that way

Having worked in a nursery and currently childminding i can answer both questioons.

NURSERY: Mat cleaned after each child using anti bacterial spray, hands cleaned using anti bac soap after each child and also pastic disposable gloves worn to protect child and carer and also plastic aprons worn so no cross contamination.

CHILDMINDER: Same as above!!

starlover · 30/01/2006 22:19

nope, don't see a prob... sorry!

Flossam · 30/01/2006 22:19

God I don't know what should be expected with this type of thing! Really though I think there should be some protection for the babies, which isn't being offered here. She should give the mat a quick wipe down maybe (although not a big deal if not visably dirty).

The gloves though are an issue imo. They shouldn't just be there to protect her. It would be better IMO to just not bother and to wash her hands thoroughly between bottoms! Otherwise I can see that 2/3 glove changes every nappy change time can get costly.

HenniPenni · 30/01/2006 22:22

As childminders we are supposed to wipe the mat after each child, wash hands etc.

starsq · 30/01/2006 22:22

I also use an anti bac gel during the day to ensure my hands are always as clean as possible

misdee · 30/01/2006 22:25

bonkerz, do your hands dry out with the gel? i use it regulary at the hospital, and mine are v dry.

Flossam · 30/01/2006 23:53

If you could see my hands Misdee! I get a red rash all over my hands after a day at work. Washing and gelling they get so sore. I couldn't wash or clean them more if I tried and then ITV are telling me we don't wash our hands enough!!! I'd be a lot of bloody good for the job if they fell off entirely.

chipmonkey · 31/01/2006 00:13

misdee, that's why you don't like the fuzzi's inserts!

septeimbre · 17/09/2010 16:13

any advice for politely bringing this to the attention of your nursery?

Al1son · 19/09/2010 21:24

I'm a childminder and I use clean gloves for each nappy change. They really are not that expensive. Each child also has his or own changing mat which I wipe over with a baby wipes after each change unless it is visibly contaminated in which case I use anti-bac spray.

I take off the gloves once the nappy is in the nappy sac and I wash my hands after each nappy change.

This is similar to the practice at our local nursery.

My hands do get dry by the end of a childminding day but that goes with the territory.

I don't go over the top with hygiene but babies' nappies can be particularly full of unpleasant bacteria so I'm quite careful about nappy changing.

septiembre, I would ask what the protocol the nursery has for nappy changing and how they check that staff are following it.
