Ive been giving Ds the Tesco version. Turns out, it says milk allergy suffers cant have it. Its the same with Ready Brek. But hes fine on it and the ingredients seem ok, does anyone know why?

I think it's to do with the production process which means it might be produced on the same line as other products containing milk. Have to say, I give my DS the Morrison's version and he's always been with it (he's severely allergic to milk). If I remember rightly, the Morrison's one says 'may contain milk' for the same reason.

There is milk in Ready brek and other instant porridge, however it could be that the precise protein that your children have problems in aren't in it?

WhiteTrash · 06/03/2012 16:12

There isnt milk in the ingredients though. Surely if there is milk in it they have to state it?

Can anybody tell me is the warning on the tesco porridge (orange box) new? I'm sure I didn't read that before but current box has it.

There is NO milk in the ingredients of Ready Brek but there is supposedly a risk of contamination with cow's milk or lactose according to their website: www.weetabix.co.uk/products/cereals/ready-brek-original#titleAllergyAdvice
mum2twoloudbabies don't know about the Tesco porridge but I'm sure the Morrison's hot oat cereal didn't used to say 'may contain milk' but does now. So annoying.

Thanks. Very annoying! Hes only little and doesnt like normal porridge. Theres Plums but their porridge costs a shocking fortune.

We used to buy the Tesco instant porridge but noticed the new warning a few months ago. I felt i couldn't ignore the 'NOT SUITABLE FOR MILK ALLERGY SUFFERERS' it's quite different to most of tesco's labels where they say 'made on the same line as...' etc so I felt like it meant they had actually detected milk contamination or something? We just use Oatibix or normal porridge now. I do feel like asking Tesco about it but haven't got round to it yet...

mum2twoloudbabies · 07/03/2012 12:59

Extremely annoying glad I'm not going mad though and it has only turned up recently. Might be we have to switch to an unfortified one.

mum2twoloudbabies · 07/03/2012 13:05

Have emailed tesco, will let you know what they come back with.

I spoke to Tesco customer services recently about the not suitable warning which was on a new box instore. They said that the production was now carried out by Weetabix, ie Ready Brek so in essence it is the same product, therefore same warning. It's a real shame as DD loved it and we haven't found an equivalent fortified replacement :(

mum2twoloudbabies · 07/03/2012 20:58

Thanks for that hibouchou it's very disappointing. Like you I think it's going to be an unfortified replacement especially now I know it's essentially ready brek.
