MMR booster - should I be concerned?

DS is due an MMR booster next week. He is allergic to egg (amongst other things) but had the initial MMR jab at the doctor's surgery as normal (on the advice of allergy consultant, who said the risk was very, very small).

Does anyone know if I should I be concerned about the booster jab at all? (I think I have some vague memory of somebody on this board saying their child reacted to the booster but not the original jab.) Can DS have hi MMR booster at the doctors surgery as normal, or should he have it in hospital?

you can ask for it to be done in hosptial, i would think thats a reasonable request with confirmed egg allergy. am aware of some parents who have been able to do this in hospital.
we had the jab without realising it was cultured in egg, but he didnt have a reaction!

it might be worth asking your allergy consultant again about this, just to be sure.

My DS had an egg allergy - he has been tested and they said there's a slight reaction now so it looks like he's growing out of it - and the GP sent him to the hospital to have it done both times. They said they didn't want to give it to him in the surgery in case of a reaction.

Have it done in the hospital, because even though a reaction is rare it may make you feel better about it.

Thanks all Smile
I was kind of expecting to be told not to stress, but I will ring the surgery and ask if DS can have the jab in hospital. Better to be safe than sorry.

I think current guidelines are that it's fine at the doctors unless he's had an anaphylactic reaction in the past, so don't worry too much about it.

Dd has recently grown out of her egg allergy and also just had her booster and that's what they told us.

If you're happier at the hospital then go for that.

Hi greenbananas think it might be my DS you were referring to ask he had a reaction to the 2nd MMR after not reacting to the 1st but it was just hives on his cheek which went with Piriton. Because of this though, he had his seasonal flu jabs in the hospital and thankfully didn't react at all. When he had the MMR jabs the staff at the surgery were aware of his allergies and had adrenaline standing by just in case which I found reassuring.

freefrommum, yes, I think it is your DD I am remembering (I found this thread). Sorry to hear she reacted, but I'm glad it was 'only' hives - must have been very worrying for you though.

I spoke to the nurse at the surgery yesterday, and have booked DS to have his MMR at the doctors next week. The nurse read the latest guidance from 'the green book', which says it is fine for MMR jabs to be given as normal. According to research done a few years ago by Dr Fox and somebody else whose name I didn't catch, any reactions that children with allergies do have to the MMR jabs are likely to be to 'other' ingredients of the vaccine, such as gelatine, rather than to egg (??)

That's what our consultant said after DS's reaction, that it was more likely that he reacted to something else in the vaccine rather than the egg (can't say I found that very reassuring, what else was he reacting to and why?). Nevertheless, I have read that severe reactions to the MMR are extremely rare/almost non-existent so I'm sure your DS will be fine - even if you're a nervous wreck :). Good luck.

My DD has epipens for an egg allergy but had it done in the surgery with no issues :)

mumat39 · 07/03/2012 08:53

Hello, DD has multiple food allergies and the nurse at the GP surgery said that as she's been fine with all the other routine vaccines, some of which are also cultured using eggs, that she should be fine. She was but I still stayed in the surgery for about 10-15 minutes afterwards just in case.

DD also had the swine flu jab and that was also the one that had been cultured with egg. Again DD was fine.

If your DS has had other vaccines at the GP surgery then he should be fine, but if you're really worried, I'm sure there won't be any issue with him having this at the hospital. Just talk to your GP and whoever does the vaccines at the surgery.

Good Luck with it and hope he's ok with it, wherever you have it done.
