Hi - I've posted before about Dd2 who is CMPI. She is 7 months old now & is on solids etc... but having a bit of bother coz I think she may have a wheat/gluten allergy too & want some advice... Generally I give her home made mush coz I know what's in it, however in an emergency or if we're out & about I give her a Hipp Organics jar coz some are dairy/milk/lactose free. I gave her a jar the other day that had wheat/gluten in it & a couple of hours later she came out in spots/rash all over her face. No vomiting though. The next morning (sorry to be graphic) her poo was covered in thick yellow mucus - not nice. We don't see paed again until March (but see dietician in February). I'm going to avoid gluten/wheat until then just in case. Do you think that the reaction she had could be an allergy or is it me being paranoid? It's only happened once, but I've only given her wheat/gluten once... Any advice or suggestions?

It is very possible. I had a similar situation with my ds at 7 months which at that time we did not know he had any allergies at all. Being a bit obvivious I gave the same jar again a week or so later and it was a bigger reaction but we still had no idea what. (He is my 3rd child and the others don't have allergies so I was blase and clueless). We ended up with the big "bang" when I gave him a 1/4 weetbix at 8 months and he swelled/hives/severe vomiting. We had our answer. Testing then showed wheat allergy amongst others and it was actually the smallest result!!! Rambling here but I think it would be wise to avoid wheat/gluten until you see dietician/paed.

Just to add, prior to this my ds had a "reaction" to a bottle of milk formula which we later found out was helped along by Nurofen. (He did also test positive for milk protein allergy). Nurofen contains wheat starch and we had given him a single dose for teething and the combination of formula and wheat was swelling/hives/vomiting. This all happened around the 7-8 month mark. We strictly avoided and he is now 2yrs 4 months. His last skin test in November showed negative for milk and wheat and he is now eating both without problem.

I'd avoid it until you see the paed. It's not really that long until march and it could be a wheat or gluten intolerance. Better to avoid wheat under one if they have an allergy already.

torgrosset- It's possible it could be a gluten allergy and worth keeping off the wheat for a bit. My DS is 13 months and was diagnosed with CMPI at 8 weeks (blood in stools and constant dirty nappies!). I didn't do gluten til 8 months (out of fear) and we had a couple of suspect nappies a couple of times. I kept leavig it and trying it again. He also had 2 severe and spectacular attack of hives at 10 and 11 months but the dr's don't think are allergy but a reaction to a virus (I agree as he was croupy and was v run down at the time). Just trying to say there can be other explanations for yucky nappies and rashes. If it makes you feel better, I would phone the dietician for advice or just a friendly ear if nothing else. I found mine good for this. I would also phone the paed if you are worried. They will take a message and get back to you. My ds is 13 months now and has now been back on all dairy products for a month. Planning meals is easier but the no dairy weaning is not too bad. Avocado's and olive oil are great for weight gain!

Didn't mean olive oil and avocado mixed together!!
