Two reactions to Peanuts in 14 month old, what do I do next?

At Christmas time DH kissed DS2 shortly after eating peanuts, DS's face came up with a rash almost instantly, I gave him Piriton and it calmed down. DS had a doctors appointment that day anyway as he had a tummy bug and high temperature so DH mentioned the rash to the doctor who said it could be an allergy but could be due to the virus he had, she gave us hydrocortisone cream and told us to redose him with piriton until the rash was gone.

This morning DS ate the top of a small finger of toast with a tiny bit of peanut butter on and started coughing, then his face came up with the angry rash again. He was fine though the rash was itching him. I gave him piriton, the rash calmed down a little and he is sleeping off the piriton.

Not sure what to do now, do I go back to the Doctors or just avoid peanuts from now on?

go to GP ask for a refferal to a immunologist /childs allergy clinic. can you get to the london hosptials?

avoid peanuts/tree nuts and take care with main contain esp in sweet /choc products.

keep a note of times and reactions and piriton use.

dont be fobbed off, it might help to ring the anaphylaxis campaign to get the name of nearest clinic doc to you.

if gp still isnt going with you, try another, prefrably newly trained gp as you might have more luck with them!

good luck!

Thanks eragon
I will ask for an appointment with the 'good' doctor at my surgery, and take it from there.
I am nowhere near London hospitals (North Wales).

At the risk of sounding daft what are tree nuts? and do I have to look out for may contain nuts in general or may contain Peanuts in particular?

Might also be worth avoiding creams conatining arachis oil and peanut oil as these can cause hypersensitivity in young children. See the doctor too!

its not so good that you live in wales, please ring the anaphylaxis campaign and ask who they would suggest you see.

i would clarify that you avoid all nuts, just in case. peanuts are legumes and they grow underground, all other nuts grow on trees. the common linking protien that causes the reaction is similar in both. people are commonly allergic to both peanuts and tree nuts.

how is your child with egg?

notso · 24/02/2012 12:10

I did not know that, feel decidedly uneducated now! Blush

He has had no reaction with eggs, he gets a slight rash after tomatoes, but nowhere near this mornings peanut reaction, his eyes were all swollen Sad.
I assume he has eaten things with possible nut contamination with no problems, I haven't checked labels etc as I was really hoping it was part of the virus.
I think this is the first time he has eaten anything with actual nuts in though.

I assume there is a lack of provision in Wales and you are not just comiserating me on the bad weather!
I know my Friend has had trouble getting help with her DD for a dairy allergy which started over a year ago.

Thanks again for the good advice.

yeah, not so good provision in wales, scotland or ireland.

keep giving the piriton, watch out for further symptoms and get medical support for anything new. such as horse throat, swollen tongue, wheezing or if he looks overly pale and dizzy. these are quite serious symptoms. again the anaphylaxis campaign web site will help with this.

yr gp legally has to reffer you for nut allergy, but the standard of help you may get might not be the immunologist, you might be sent to a local pead with some allergy knowledge.
good luck, keep us posted, and if no joy with the anaphylaxis campaign , allergyuk are cool as well!

Same thing happened to DD1. We asked to be referred to allergist (we are in London). She's sensitised to most nuts (peanuts, almonds, pine, hazelnut etc). She comes out in hives. At the same time, the allergist tested for other things, and she's sensitised to pollen and raw eggs amongst other things!

We don't have a need for an epi pen (thankfully!), but carry a small bottle of piriton around all the time (special care has to be taken when eating out/biscuits/cakes/chocolate/other ppl who've eaten nuts). DD1 has to avoid all nuts until her review at 5 yo.

Good luck!

He is awake now the rash is not as angry but still very obvious, the swelling round his eyes has come down.
Made appointment with the Doctor but it's not until next week.
Will let you know how I get on.
