Does anyone have any experience of a banana allergy (also could be related to ''latex fruit')?

looks like DS2 10mo has an allergy to bananas. This could also be related to an allergy to latex. there are bananas in everything! Ok slight exaggeration.

GP directed me to this - looks to be the second type of allergy

Dd was allergic to bananas as a baby we avoided them until she was older (can't remember how old) and she has been fine ever since. She has no other allergies.

Ds, who is older, has peanut, hazelnut, some animals, house dust mite and grass pollen allergies (he outgrew egg allergy at 7yrs). So we thought dd was gong the same way when she started vomitingand getting hives when having banana.

Not sure if that is any help!

Dd had an allergy to bananas. If she had any it made hee vomit profusely almost immediately. She grew out of it when she was about 4.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/02/2012 18:10

So it is grow-outable then? That's good.

Sneezeblossom - the website indicates that if the reaction is immediate it is more likely related to tree pollen allergy. Ds2's reaction has been each time four hours after eating so more likely the latex thing. Interesting!

Did you keep trying banana? Or hold off to a certain age? GP suggests referring for possible link to latex allergy.

Foggy - do you remember if your DS's reaction was immediate or delayed?

DM had a severe anaphylactic (sp?) reaction to ripe banana a few years ago. She has steered clear although recently has begun eating very small amounts of very green bananas (she missed eating them as she has problems with so many fruits they were her staple for years) with no ill effects. She previously ate only green bananas - the reaction was the one time she'd eaten a ripe banana in years and years. Reaction was immediate, not delayed (she was being resuscitated within thirty minutes).

She has no latex allergy but other allergies linked to tree pollen.

It's not guaranteed that they will grow out of it. My Dd gets hayfever too.

NormanTheForeman · 21/02/2012 18:35

Ds is allergic to bananas. When he had them as a baby, he was sick very soon afterwards. We haven't really tried him with them now he's older, as he is unwilling to try them, knowing they made him sick in the past. He does also get hay fever.

Fogie · 21/02/2012 18:39

Dd's reactions were immediate (it took a couple of reactins before we worked out what it was). She is fine with latex.

I would avoid bananas. Ds' allergy consultant has never said to keep trying little bits of anything he is allergic to.

Fogie · 21/02/2012 18:41

OP, has your ds been exposed to latex as fa as you know - maybe from balloons, rubber gloves, plasters?

WhiteTrash · 21/02/2012 20:31

My son has a problem with bananas, although not an allergy. They cramp up his stomach and give him awful green, loose, bubbly poo.

What happens to your baby?

MrsJasonBourne · 21/02/2012 20:37

I don't have an allergy but I do have an intolerance of bananas. I asked my gp about it once and I'm sure he said it was due to the level of potassium in bananas and that it was quite common. I get an awful stomach ache, like a bad cramp. Not an allergic reaction obviously, but apparently a very common one.

Fogie · 21/02/2012 20:57

I have read your link now.

Interesting how dd's reaction to banana was immediate, suggesting tree pollen allerg link, but her symptoms, vomiting, hives is indicative of the latex allergy link Confused

There is never anything straight forward when it comes to allergy!

garliclover · 21/02/2012 21:23

My DS gets hives every time he eats bananas, but with no other symptoms. He seems fine with processed bananas, when they're in fruit pots, etc. He's never liked them, though, which to me is a sign we should stay clear of them for the time being.

greenbananas · 21/02/2012 21:41

Interesting link from your GP, Bellabear.

DS (aged 3) is allergic to bananas -this was confirmed by a RAST test - and he's allergic to a few other things as well. He got lots of hives when we tried rubbing banana on his skin. He seems fine with latex (plays happily with balloons). He has always refused to eat avocado, mango and kiwi, and he got a red rash from touching kiwi.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/02/2012 22:02

His reaction is that four hours (exactly!) after eating bananas he throws up. This happened at six months + 1 week, six months + 2 weeks and then today (10months). He also threw up just a little a while after having some baby muesli that contain bananas. I'm just going to avoid them.

He's had a fair bit of contact with balloons although as the GP pointed out, he hasn't been eating them!!

It's interesting to hear other stories so thank you. It's not an allergy I have ever heard of beforehand!

And in answer to another post, I can't think that he had any other latex link apart from balloons
