still waiting for referal to come through to be instructed properly, in the mean time could anyone concisely explain how best to wash dd (24 weeks) with emollients (namely epaderm) and moisturise with aveeno afterwards.

she is scratching like mad at night and waking up 4 or more times!

excema getting out of control and want to rein it in if possible before appointment at hospital comes through since could be in for a long wait.

thks

are you applying any cream during the day?

blondehelen · 25/01/2006 17:29

i would fill the bath with water and put the good amount of the epaderm on a flannel a wash her using it like a soap. i do this for my patients but with aqueous cream

forevermore · 25/01/2006 17:30

we apply aveeno followed by epaderm and epaderm only when she scratches / looks sore

epaderm is like lard isnt it? can it be mixed with hot water so its not as heavy? i mix emulysifying ointment with hot water i na small bowl till it goes creamier and easy to work with. then i used it like soap.

We've had good results with Epaderm - used on a flannel like a soap and rubbed in afterwards onto damp (not wet) skin. Epaderm does make them very slippery in the bath though - the words trying to catch a goldfish springs to mind!

i use epaderm and aveeno on my dd who has moderate to bad eczema. with these two things her skin looks like she doesn't have it.
I in plain bathwater. Then take a small amount of epaderm in one hand and then wet both hands and rub together until the epaderm turn into a white cream, almost looking like thick soap suds. (if you want, you can follow this step and add epaderm to the bathwater) i then coat her entire body with it, scalp too and leave it on her for a few minutes. i rinse off any excess - without rubbing - and the take her out and pat her dry. I then moisturise her with aveeno. I put hydrocortizone cream on any red eczema spots she may have.

Hope this helps.

What are you washing her bed clothes/pyjamas/sleepsuit in? Could be the washing powder irritating.

I dont use epaderm - couldnt get on with it and didnt seem to help.

For my DD we have been using oilatum in the bath water, and rubbing in Diprobase - which i think is excellent - morning and night. However we use steriod creams as and when.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/01/2006 20:18

I bath DD daily because i consider the oilatum bath a treatment IYSWIM.

i have just started using surcare for washing her clothes.....

she's had a blocked nose / cold for three weeks now and the main flare up coincided with when the cold started....or could be just by chance?

Maybe, maybe not. Things can flare up when they are run down. Does she have any other allergies?

I found surcare didnt work for me and went back to using persil non bio and comfort pure.

Whatever you do use, make sure you dont use too much of it.

dermatologist says to bath everyday but for only around 10 minutes. I have the bathwater at around normal body temp (measured with one of those thermometers that change colour) as hot water causes skin to dry out in a warm bathroom.

before this regimen and the big improvement in her eczema, I swaddled dd tightly to keep her arms to her side so I didn't have a big problem with her scratching. I swaddled her till 8.5 months! You may be surprised at how quickly the aveeno and epaderm create big improvement or maybe I was just lucky.

oh, you can also use epaderm as a lotion (in place of aveeno) after the bath too. do the same by combining with water and 'lathering' it.

kiskidee · 25/01/2006 21:06

"as hot water causes skin to dry out in a warm bathroom"

ooops. that is not v. well put. I bath her in a warm bathroom. hot bathwater dries out skin.

I also remoisturise her with aveeno the next morning .

let us know how you get on.

sallymac · 26/01/2006 10:38

Can I ask how do you stop your child scratching whilst you are putitng the cream on you talk about.

Is Epadarm an emollient or a steriod cream?

thanks

alexsmum · 26/01/2006 10:52

epaderm is an emollient.

the epaderm was a real blessing for us- it helped turn things around.
the other thing i am evangelical about is homeopathy. ds was in a right state. his eczema was very wet and was constantly getting infected. he would be ok as long as he was on anti biotics but then as soon as he finished it would flare up again. his face was the worst- oozing and bleeding constantly.
we wnet to a homeopath as a last resort try anything measure.i was extrememly sceptical , didn't like the homeopath, didn't think it would work. within three or four days it had all dried up and it was never again as bad as it had been. never.it stayed dry- and because it was dry we could moisturise and it cleared up. he is now like a little peach! not saying it will work for everyone but it did for for us.
