My 15 month old DD has been diagnosed with a milk intolerance after two months of tummy pains, wind, awful nappies and general grumpyness (I stopped breastfeeding her at 13 months and went from formula to follow on to cows milk with no change of symptoms)

Over the last couple of weeks while waiting for the test results I've been giving soya milk instead of cows milk and it's made a huge improvement to her, she's so much happier - but the doctor was very dismissive of my concerns of cutting out milk at this age. Is it ok? And is there anything I need to bear in mind with her diet? She hasn't eaten cheese or yogurt for quite a while - it's funny how things slot into place once you're aware of the problem!

I think you're doing exactly the right thing, there are lots of children and adults (including myself) who have issues with dairy. I'm lactose intolerant and have had to change all my diary products to either soya or lactofree and it's made a huge difference. As long as you are providing a healthy balanced diet and she is getting the right levels of calcium in her diet then personally I would ignore the doctor. You aren't cutting out milk as you are giving a soya alternative. There are lots of children who are brought up vegan and who can't have dairy from an even younger age, you are aware of the problem and have made changes which have benefitted your daughter. I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for that, it's all new to me and I wasn't sure if soya is an acceptable alternative in terms of calcium etc. She guzzles the milk, but isn't too fond of the yogurts at the moment, but as they taste so similar to normal yogurt she may associate it with tummyache I suppose.
I will look at Lactofree - I did wonder if there was anything else. Thanks.
