My boy twin - 6.5 mths - ate some cheddar cheese today, and reacted to it quite badly. He went bright red in the face, a hives rash came up. His bottom lip and tongue seemed to swell up, though it's hard to be sure, and he coughed a lot. It passed in about 15 mins and he seemed fine afterwards.

I took him straight to the GP who will refer him for allergy testing and advised to avoid dairy in the meantime.

He's fully breastfed now, but has had formula in the past with no obvious ill effects. He had a small amount in scbu when he was born, and from 6wks to 3 mths he had one bottle a day, usually taking about 4 oz. At 3 mths he refused the bottle and I didn't push it, so he hasn't had formula since.

So my questions are:

Could he be allergic to cheese but not all dairy? I feel a bit thick here, but what is in cheddar cheese, apart from milk? It was definitely cheese that caused the reaction, a it was a stick of cheddar he was eating, not, say, a sandwich, or something with cheese as an ingredient.

If he is allergic to dairy, how come he seemed to tolerate the formula ok? Do they develop allergies as they get older?

He's got nasty eczema patches on his face around his jawline, and also cradle cap. The rest of his body isn't too bad. If I went dairy free, might that help the eczema?

I'd be grateful if anyone can enlighten me on any of this - feeling a bit at sea with this one!

His twin sister is also being tested as she had a rash round her mouth after eating a tuna mayo sandwich yesterday. I'm thinking egg is probably the likely culprit for her? Cooking family meals in this house is going to be challenging!

Thanks in advance Smile

Sounds like a dairy allergy although there is another possibility with cheese, particularly if it contained annatto, which is a colouring that can cause allergic reactions . My dd had similar reaction to cheese at that age (also allergic to egg but we didn't find that out until later). She also had cradle cap and eczema.

She'd had a small amount of formula up to a few days old but nothing after that. I did try cutting out dairy for a few weeks to see if her eczema improved but it didn't seem to make any difference for us - other people say it helps.

Dairy and egg allergies are common and the most grow-outable-of allergies (although no guarantees).

It might take a while to get referred for allergy testing. Keep persevering if you seem to get "lost" in the system and don't "experiment" with more dairy if you think that's what's caused the reaction until he's been tested. Some children who react to dairy also react to soya, so watch out for that.

DD has now grown out of her egg allergy, although I'm now a world-class packet checker for absolutely everything she eats. As they get older, the Free From section in supermarkets will become your friend. We were prescribed some dairy free formula (nutramigen) but never actually used it except to check that she didn't react to it.

Good luck - allergies suck but there's lots of support around on here.

My DS1 was allergic to dairy, discovered at 6 months when given yoghurt. He was exclusively BF so can't really comment on formula nor can I answer many of your questions, sorry but would say that my DS1 had dreadful skin, which greatly improved when weaning got underway.

We did get formula on prescription, used soya based yoghurts and vitalite spread. We also found that we had to avoid products with whey in it (ie baby porridges). We also got telephone advice from the hospital paedatric nutrisionalist (sp?)

Good luck, it wasn't as bad I had first feared and the good news was he grew out of it at 20 months approx

Thank you CokeFan. I've just checked the pack of Cathedral City and I can't see annatto listed anywhere.

I think I'm going to try going dairy free for a few weeks and see if that helps. It's worth a try. It seems pointless slapping endless different creams on his face if we can get to the root of the problem.

Will go and check out the 'free from' section in Tesco's tomorrow!

My son has recently (over the last year) developed eczema on back of his knees, face, and neck. I cut out dairy products from his diet 3 weeks ago and have slowly watched the eczema clear up (from inflamed bright red spots that itch back to regular coloured and non inflamed skin). I have also noticed his sick smelling bright yellow pooh has changed to regular coloured pooh and is actually firm as opposed to a chicken korma. It takes about 28 days for the skin to show improvements so I guess at it should be good as new within a week - it certainly looks like it will.

Oh that's great Vanquish - I so hope it works for ds. He was sooo itchy tonight Sad

I'm finding the dairy free tough going though - I'm bfing both twins so I'm always ravenous. I'll get the hang of it though, and if it sorts him out, it'll be worth it.

Time to get in the driving seat and take control! Start at www.allergybestbuys.co.uk Buy a Milk Allergy home test and an Egg Allergy home test and then you'll know for certain. These are the same tests (IgE) as your doctor would use. Saved me a whole load of time and worry when my twins had similar symptoms. You can also buy Dairy & Egg-free Cake Recipes and the Allergy-free Cook Book from the same website. Both recommended. Good luck!

Yes, my GP has referred us and I'm happy to wait, as because they're so young they don't need a huge selection of foods just yet, but thanks Kiwi. I'll check out that website Smile
