Skin rashes when weaning - allergy?

My boy twin is 6 1/2 months and we started weaning a couple of weeks ago.

He's developed eczema patches at around 5 months old, that are getting worse, esp on his face.

His face has come out in a blotchy red rash when eating porridge, philly on rice cake and cheese on toast. The rash fades after half an hour or so and doesn't seem to bother him.

I haven't yet given him tomatoes, strawberries or citrus fruit as I know they are a common trigger for his kind of rash.

He has had a jacket potato with olive margarine (not dairy free) with no reaction, and he had a tuna mayo sandwich for lunch today with no reaction.

He's exclusively breast fed, though had a daily bottle of formula from 6 wks to 3 months, until he turned his nose up at the bottle. There was no noticeable reaction to the formula.

My question is, is it likely that the skin rash is just that, a skin rash, or is it likely to be a symptom of an allergy? He's actually eating minute quantities atm, in fact a lot of the time I'm not convinced he swallows anything at all, but presumably he will at some point!

His poo was very green tonight too, coming to think of it, and it's usually yellowy.

Thank you Smile

Dont have an actual answer for you, but just to reassure you, when DS was weaning he had a one off reaction to possibly a yoghurt, had to take him to a&e as his face swelled up! This was about this time last year, and he hasn't had a reaction to anything at all since then touch wood!

my DD had very badly excoriated skin around her face during weaning and much later we discovered a cheese intolerance. My GP just kept treating her for excema but we were in fact killing her with cheese. (ok not killing but she wasn't gaining weight or looking well and was having watery then mucus poo) We avoid all cheese and she's fine. If you keep a food diary you will quickly see what makes it worse....so you can avoid it.

That's interesting Shouldbe - Ds has reacted badly to cheese today. I stupidly gave him a stick of cheddar to munch on (what was I thinking?) and his face went bright red, hives rash, swollen lips and tongue Sad

It subsided after 15 mins of so and I took him to GP this afternoon. He's going to be referred for allergy testing, along with his sister who had a mild skin rash after eating a tuna mayo sandwich yesterday (egg allergy?) So at least we should know what we're dealing with.

Is your DD ok with other dairy? Is it just cheese that causes the problem?

No it's just cheese, which is a bit weird. I'd be careful with things like mini cheddars and jaffa cakes as these caused a reaction. We have no idea why jaffa cakes as she's fine with egg. Her allergies are cheese, nuts and kiwi. Good luck with the allergy testing.

Have you got some piriton in the house? If that happens again I'd get him to A&E pretty quick. Was the swelling just localised and was he pale and clammy? check out the anaphylaxis campaign website not to scare you but just so you are informed about what to do and what to look out for. Unfortunately not all GP's are fully informed. Sorry you've had such a scary day. Hope your DS is soon back to his usual self.

Thank you. The GP prescribed some antihistamine in case it happens again

I'm playing very safe with what I'm giving him atm - he's not yet 7 months so hardly needs food at all, so I'm sticking to basic fruit and veg (no kiwi or strawberries), bread, rice cakes and meat. No egg for the time being as my older ds is sensitive to that . We're blw and he's eating hardly anything yet so it's not too hard.

I'm going dairy free from today to see if that helps his eczema - now that IS hard!
