Nasonex Nasal Spray - weight gain?

Hi, I was diagnosed with a dust mite allergy last summer and have been taking one anti-histamine tablet and a spray of Nasonex every day for the last 8 months. My nose has started to bleed through irritation, rather than an actual nose bleed, so I have stopped the spray for the last few days, but more surprisingly, I seem to have put on quite a bit of weight despite not changing my lifestyle and perhaps even cutting back, including not drinking through the whole of January. Has anyone else experienced weight gain while using Nasonex? Not sure if it counts, I am 42, and as normal as can be, in every other way! I have been given a nasal cream to help the bleeding called naseptin, which appears to be an anti-biotic. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

change the way you squirt the nasal spray in to your nose, some docs explain an upside down method, or pointing the end towards opposite ear at the top. iswim.

as for weight gain, no, this would not cause weight gain. yr age is a clue, soon as u hit over 40s body changes , less fertile, and much more easy to gain weight. its a right bummer, but If i diet I loose much less a week than i did in my 30's. exercise is the key (apparently, and i am sooo not a fan!)

Hi eragon, thanks for the information on better spraying. I have since googled my thoughts on weight gain, and believe it or not, others, younger than me, have actually found the same thing. Apparently it is due to the steroids contained in the spray.

still dont believe it, its not that high in steriods, thin the skin in nose, yes, but goodness me, weight gain!

oral tablets, yeah, weight gain. prednesilone for e.g.

lots of people are on or off medication are getting rounder, they are not all spraying stuff up their nose.....

p.s my son isnt getting fat , still underweight....

I use Nasonex and I also checked with my pharmacy about whether it could cause weight gain and was told it couldn't but i'm not quite convinced especially now. I'm 29 and i've been on it for about a year now. I did change my diet slightly and exercised more and also only use the spray every other day. I lost some weight. Christmas came I exercised less ate more and put weight back on lol

Cakes, so do you think you put weight on due to eating more and exercising less? Or because of the Nasonex? I can't use it for the next 5 days or so, and I am watching my food intake like a hawk, but now I won't know if it is because I have stopped the Nasonex, anyway I am convinced that something other than my age is to blame!

Eragon, that is good to hear about your son, now that you mention it though, my friend's son who has allergies and asthma, is quite chubby and in fact small for his age, of course, everyone is different anyway, and indeed, Nasonex could affect different people in different ways. He has been taking it for a few years. I am going to steer clear for a while and see what happens. I am making a food diary to see if I am eating more than I used to and stick to the same exercise as usual. Time will tell.

hello, might be an old thread but I can reassure those who think they are putting on weight due to nasonex that they are correct. I'm in my very early thirties and have been the same (slim but healthy) size all my life - indeed my wardrobe is full of clothes of all ages that i just dont grow out of (barr the first year at uni!). I've begun to notice that (and its a very strange sensation for me) my clothing, including tweed skirts etc are beginning to be rather taught across my backside (they've varied between being loosish and well-fitting over the space of 6 years), as well as a pair of jeans that I bought at xmas to be tight but fitting now being at the point of blood-flow restricting. there is quite simply not another thing it could be. I began nasonex following 2weeks of beclametasone in January ( 2 sprays in each nostrils at night). quite simple - this is fact for me, and I'm not playing the 'have you changed anything else blather - no, I'd obviously know about that/wouldnt be surprised if I'd suddenly developed a chocolate habit, its not my 'age', and my grandmother (and mother) is actually still the same size as she was when she was 19 and she is in her 80s. Having said this, its really been a help to make me feel better also, as I used to have terrible tension headaches every weekend that tended to leave me bed-ridden in a dark room with a cold compress. this has much improved. I'm hoping that whilst my eyes now seem to be extra watery in compensation, at least everyone wont assume I have flu and hayfever every time i go to any kind of gathering this summer - I once got through 3 full six-pack packets of tissues - i.e. around 150 balmed tissues (being very carefully used to get the most 'blows' out of each tissue too) in the space of one red hot chillis gig - which should give you an idea of the continual nature of running nose - thank goodness I was in the seated area to stack the boxes and that they were balmed tissues...

bummer if I have to replace my new wardrobe, but I think it'd have to be a scary amount piling on to put me off - so we will see what happens over the coming year!
