Well, the tree is finally up, the (dairy, egg and nut-free) Christmas cake is ready to be iced, I have drunk most of a bottle of wine already Blush and I am feeling a little bit sentimental...

You lovely allergy mums have given me so much support over the last 3 years. I am not exaggerating when I say that you have probably helped to save DS's life.

Merry Christmas to you all! Smile Smile Smile

Merry Christmas to you too.

Happy Christmas to you too Greenbananas. And also to everyone else who finds themselves on this board.

You have helped me enormously through the muddle, sadness and downright terror of my dds various food allergies. Thank you for all being there when I need you most and just 'getting it'.

Wishing you all peaceful, event-free and happy Christmases!

PS - My dairy, egg and wheat free Xmas pud served with soya custard was a big success with everyone, apart from the little lady (dd2) for whom it was primarily intended!!
In fact, barring milk in tea and coffee the whole day was egg and dairy free! Xmas Grin

And a Merry Christmas to you all from me too. We also managed to get through it without any major disasters. My poor mum was so worried about dad cooking the Xmas dinner for my 2, she didn't stop nagging him all day (he does have a habit of forgetting and sticking butter on everything!). I made freefrom pigs in blankets and took their own gravy but they had the same meat and veg as the rest of us. Mum made gluten free Welsh cakes for DD and bought gf mince pies too while DS had jelly & raspberries made by my aunt (she claims to be intolerant to egg but none of us are very convinced given the things she eats without any problems!). The only near miss was on Boxing Day when we went back to my parents for cold meat & chips and discovered that despite my mum's instructions to throw away the left over stuffing my aunt had stuck it in with the left over turkey. Thankfully the pork was in a different container so my 2 had that (so glad I noticed before my dad dished up the turkey to them both!). Oh, it's all good fun isn't it? Hmm

This is the first year we've done it at home and lordy does it make it easier to control the food. Best Xmas I've had in years!

shouldbeelswhere · 27/12/2011 18:54

Wishing you all a Happy and uneventful (in an allergy kind of way) Christmas Xmas Smile

greenbananas · 27/12/2011 19:59

Bless you all, and congratulations on a reaction free Christmas! Smile

Our near miss was today, when I foolishly gave DS a slice of cucumber from my plate at a family buffet Blush - turns out the cucumber had been chopped with the same knife as the cheese... there was spectacular vomiting and antihistamine, but fortunately nothing worse.

I have learned (again!) today about only letting DS eat out of his own 'special bag' of safe food. It never even occured to me that the cucumber would not be safe!

whelk, you are right about the joys of catering at home!

Merry Christmas to you all once again Smile

oh Greenbananas what a pain. Poor DS and poor you. Hope he's soon feeling better.

Whelk · 29/12/2011 12:02

Greenbananas - Goodness that sounds frightening. Hope ds is ok?
Did you make any plans around different preschools or are you going to leave it for now?

shouldbeelswhere · 29/12/2011 12:16

Oh greenbananas we're copying you! up all night clearing up sick after some mystery contamination at a resturant. I'm on ABU ranting...

greenbananas · 29/12/2011 16:59

oh shouldbeelsewhere, how sad! How is your DD today? I've just looked up your thread on AIBU, and am a bit saddened by some of the responses.

DS is fine after his contaminated-cucumber experience (actually, he is currently high as a kite on Christmas haribo from the tree and racing around like a mad thing). Hope your DD recovers quickly too.

Whelk, I haven't been looking for other pre-schools... perhaps I am being unnecessarily negative, but I have a depressing feeling that the issues will be the same in most of them (although the one we tried was simply awful and I can't imagine anywhere being worse). I have started up as a childminder, and I am also making a huge effort to take DS to lots of groups. Now that he's 3, he really doesn't want me breathing over his shoulder all the time, and he needs some time away from me, but I am basically terrified to leave him at any pre-school now Sad

Thanks greenbananas. You argued the case very eloquently as did you whelk, thank you. Yet again we see that others just don't get it.

Although she's still very pale and not eating food she's tucking into choc and sweets - oh well, it's christmas...yesterday I gave her 3 doses of piriton, should I continue that today or just see how she goes? What would you both do?

shouldbeelswhere · 30/12/2011 08:44

oh ment to say, don't give up on the preschool idea. We have been lucky enough to find a really good one so they do exist.

Whelk · 30/12/2011 13:16

Shouldbeelsewhere - I would probably see how your dd is before giving more Piriton as it can make them a bit drowsy. I might be tempted to give more at bed time when I couldn't keep such a close eye on her.

Greenbananas- I understand how you feel, and I don't expect your ds does need to be doing his own thing without you at such a young age but if it is the right thing for both of you, and you can afford it (Early Years funding kicks in the term after they turn 3) a nursery may be an option. They tend to cover the same preschool type things.

My dds have been to 2 nurseries, both of which have been excellent at catering for milk, egg allergies. I think they often have a higher staff to child ratio as often pre-schoolers are mixed with toddlers, so can offer a one-to-one level of supervision at meal times.

eragon · 30/12/2011 17:00

hope every one had a good christmas, now hope the new year celebrations are reaction free for all!

good luck!

youarekidding · 30/12/2011 17:17

Merry Christmas everyone and Wine here's to a great new year.

We got through Christmas fairly unscathed (although DS not food allergic) but I think the excitement may have triggered something in him.

3 times in 5 days we had strange incidents. One was the blistered leg and coughing (there's a thread), one of suddenly going very quiet and projectile vomiting (gave AH just in case) but recovered fairly quickly and another where he got another blister (on nipple!) and in mouth so gave AH again as scratching.

Seems fine now and AH seemed to help the all over itching - of course I have no idea what set it off though. Grin
