Urticaria?

Any other mummys out there with a child with urticaria? My 19mo son was diagnosed after a severe allergy to penicillin at 6mo and another reaction to strawberries a few weeks later.
He has since had reactions to pineapples, baking chocolate, wotsits, cows milk and numerous undiscovered foods/drinks. (has been more but cant think!)
He also has physical (contact) urticaria, pressure, drug induced type...

Would be nice to speak to other families in the same situation!

have you been reffered to a immunoligist for food and environmental alleriges?

my son has peanut/egg/yeast extract/high histamine food problems e.g raw tomato/beans/kiwi fruit./ one tree nut, possibly left to outgrow.

also allergic to hay fever/mold/tree pollen/dustmite/cats/dogs/ poss new rabbit....

has sudden random facial swelling not linked to other allergies and is currently under investigation for poss inherited cause.

has used epi 3 times so far.

not condsidered asthmatic, but has asthmatic response during reactions. may ? this at next appointment as seems to stuggle during sport.

allergies are a complicated business arent they?

Have not been referred as my gp seems uninterested in my little angel! Only got a diagnose after him having two severe reactions (penicillin and strawberries) from a family friend who happens to be a dermatologist (not even staff at AnE believed my son to be interesting!)

He has lots of smaller reactions (puffy eyes, swelling, hayfever-y tupe symptoms) to lots of high-histamine foods.
The reactions normally last around 2-3 days but, do vary! Not sure what step to take next?

One doctor did comment about my son possibly needing an epi-pen yet when i mentioned this to my regular gp he shot me down with a reply of 'an epi-pen is not a quick fix, it is not to be used every time he sneezes'
I did argue that i understood the severity if its use (my best friend has latex allergies to which she carries one so am aware of how to use/when to use!)

Have been perscribed an anti-histamine as over the counter ones make him drowsy and have no effect on helping the reaction whatsoever.
We help to soothe the itchiness by bathing him more and using calamine lotion which thankfully works a treat.. We did start off with a steriod based cream but only need to use that with severe reactions (havent had serious ond for around 3 months thankfully as becoming more aware of trigger goods!)

Thank you for your reply, i do not know another child with this so nice to meet another muma in the same boat Smile

DD has had urticaria since she was 18 months old. It always appears on her feet a day or so before she becomes ill so we think its when her immune system kicks in.

The rash varies in severity depending on how ill she is.

The only thing the doctor warned us about was if it appeared on her face as it could move into her deep tissue in her throat and restrict her breathing.

Plus side is that kid van never fake an illness.

Luckily she doesn't itch with it, but its an ugly old rash.

Very pleased to her your LO doesnt get a reaction on their face.. My sons usually starts on his stomache and bottom and will nearly always go to his face. We have had three cases where i believed his throat was swelling and compromising hid breathing... Needless to say i tooj him straight to hospital!
Have your little ones been offered any allergy screenings of any kind? Any tests that have furthered your knowledge of your childrens condition?

Sorry for all the questions, am just curious as have not received much support from health care !

Definitely need to push for referral to allergy specialist. Urticaria is another name for hives and is often the first sign of an allergic reaction, it is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis and you need to know what is causing it. I don't want to scare you but allergic reactions can become life threatening in a matter of minutes with very little warning so you really need to get this sorted and contrary to what your GP said, I do think it sounds as though your DS needs an epi-pen due to throat swelling and breathing difficulties. My DS is anaphylactic to milk, wheat, eggs and nuts. He comes out in hives on skin contact with these foods but becomes severely unwell if he consumes them. Don't be fobbed off, keep pushing for a referral. It might not be easy but it's well worth fighting for.

My son has the same - lips/face/ throat swelling to lots of food and totally inconsistent. Ask for a blood test for CUI -chronic urticaria Index. Regarding allergy - my son has a positive rast to almost every food he has been tested for - all his allergy markers are high - and therefore they say the reactions are normal for him as an individual - ie he is not actually allergic to any food. We do carry an epipen and he takes levocitirizine and pepcid which lower his histamine levels and reactions have reduced from every day to a couple a month - yay! Things have improved but we do not actually know why he is like this ( and neither do they).
