Does this sound like a nut allergy ??

While on my way home from xmas shopping today, dd2 (12) txt me to say she'd eaten some mini snickers sweets and now she felt funny. She said her tongue and throat were itchy and felt like pins and needles and her throat felt tight. She said she was also coughing.

I rung xp and got him to go round and check on her and he said she was fine, but she said it was a very odd feelling that she's never had before.

She said she only started to notice the symptoms after her 4th mini snicker. and they had been eaten over the course of about 90 minutes.

She used her inhaler and had a drink of water, and i also told her to clean her brace incase there was any food still on it.

She said her tongue still feels a bit itchy now.

I have no experience of allergies at all. What if anything, am I supposed to do now ? Does it sound like an allergic reaction ?

It does sound to me like the first reaction that my friends dd had. The nest time she had peanuts she vomited and collaped and my friend wished she'd put two and two together after the first reaction iyswim.

I would take her to her gp next week and make sure she doesn't eat any peanuts in the meantime.

Oh blimey, how awful for your friend and her dd.

I will certainly be taking her on monday and will make sure she avoids peanuts and any other nuts in the meantime.

Thank's for posting

I agree that it sounds like a reaction and an appointment at the GP would be a good idea particularly if she has asthma. Allergy testing will check not only peanuts but also whether she is allergic to other nuts, which is useful to know.

In the meantime, avoid nuts and get some Piriton syrup (not tablets because these take longer to get into the system) and make sure she has it with her when out. If she has the symptoms again, she should have a dose of Piriton straigh away and tell an adult ( Reactions can also return once the medicatin has worn off)

Thank's. I think we have some Piriton already so will give her some.

Do i need to avoid things that contain traces of nuts ?? Tonights asda lasagne for example ??

I probably wouldn't avoid something like that but then, I am more slack about ds' nut allergy than many!

The only time ds has reacted to 'traces' has been wih chocolate, so we tend to stick to big brands or Kinerton

Poor thing! Does sound like a reaction.

DD was 4 when I bit the walnut off the top of a walnut whip, and gave her the chocolate whar was left. Within literally 20 seconds, shw was on her hands and knees fighting for breath, completely blue. Her head went absolutely enormous...seriously like some alien!! She had skin under her arms hanging off her body like her skin had been stretched (I now know were hives),and was making weird grunting noises. I was in total shock. Called the ambulance and she was blue lighted in,A&E 5 doctors surrounding her bed.

Turns out severe allergy to walnuts and pecans, and she's 13 now and carries an epipen.

Allergies are no joke,so I always tell people who have a suspicion to get checked. Put the fear of God up me I can tell ya!!!!

TheOriginalNutcracker · 16/12/2011 16:42

Omg crazy, that is awful. Obviously better to be on the safe side then.

I am thinking the lasagne should be ok, hopefully.

Might have to go through the cupboards later though and check what things we have that actually contain nuts.

Yes be on the safe side. I think she should be ok if she avoids trace of nuts things until you know for sure what and if she has an allergy.. DD has inadvertently ate trace of nut things (those bueno choc),but was ok.

When I am in shops now and I see walnut whips on the shelf...I start to shake a bit! Sounds stupid....but it was so so scary.
