Does anyone know how allergic aware they are in South Africa?

If we go to restaurant and explain that ds is allergic to tree nuts and eggs will they think we're nutters?

I know most places are aware of the seriousness of these allergies in N America, but unsure of other countries.

Anyone got any knowledge of South Africa?

We've been a few times but as we don't have any allergies in the family I don't know. A poster called Dejags lives in Cape Town so she'll probably know. Put out a shout for her, or perhaps CAT her?

I am South African and have been living in the uk for 7 years. They definately were not as aware of seriousness of nut allergies when i left. But no-one in our family has allergies so not such an issue. South African cuisine is still quite meat dominated so guess it would be safe to order steak/fish etc grilled with veg?

Cape Town is very cosmopolitan so I am sure they get queries from foreign tourists a lot..

I don't think they are very allergic aware there. You will have to spell out exactly what he is allergic to (exactly what are tree nuts for example) and have a list of alternative names for egg ingredients.

Is it an anaphylactic allergy?

The doctors/private hospitals there are excellent though so if you get into any medical trouble, you should be in very good hands (not that you will need it of course!).

just read back my post and it sounds a bit negative! I agree with Boompi - everything is very meat/fish orientated so I imagine they would be able to conjure up a dish for him. They are generally very tourist friendly there so I doubt they will think you are nutters.
