DD woke screaming in pain...

DD woke screaming in bed, indicating that her back was painful and rubbing at it. On further inspection I noticed a red patch with white blisters on it, like a nettle rash.

This was at the base of her back and around the sides of her torso. I carried her downstairs as she was very upset and removed her t-shirt, to find patches of rash on the front and back of her body, with scratches to the skin caused by her itching, particularly on her neck and lower back. This rash extended to her legs with angry patches on the insides of her thighs, one on her private areas and on her calves. It was visible spreading along her skin.

Clothing was worn once and washed in her usual washing powder and softened. Bedding was clean but also used and washed in the same.

Foods eaten today include grapes, fruit and fibre cereal and cows milk, a packet of maize crisps which where onion flavoured, some beef steak with gravy and puff pastry, carrots, parsnips, mashed potatoes and an egg.

As far as I am aware there has been no contact with unusual products or chemicals. We do have a dog in the house which is not usual, however she had been playing with him all afternoon and this reaction seemed to occur about an hour after being put to bed.

I medicated with 2.5ml piriton and 10ml paracetamol suspension because she was screaming with pain. Skin was covered in diprobase to sooth the pain and itching.

She has had an upper respiratory infection which has caused a lot of coughing and nasal congestion, and has been having both inhalers twice a day, two puffs each.

We saw the asthma/allergies consultant on Wednesday and she had skin prick testing done for all the things I believed she reacted to, and none of them came up, so was told all the foods I had excluded from her diet could be given to her again. But now this... I'm feeling a bit upset about it.

Any thoughts?

Did you take her to the doctor yet??

GrownUpBelievesInSanta · 10/12/2011 21:13

No, it's hives and there is no swelling to her neck, mouth or tongue. I've given her antihistamine medication to reduce the reaction and paracetamol for the pain and I don't think there is much else I can do, or that a doctor would do at this time of night. I'll take her to the nurse-led walk in tomorrow if the hives are still present, she's lying on the sofa now.

Sounds like a viral reaction to me but worth getting it checked out with the GP. It's suprisingly common in children, they basically react to a particular virus and come out in hives like an allergic reaction but it generally doesn't last long and isn't harmful.

She's hunky dory today, just scratches on her skin from the itching. I've washed all her bedding in her usual stuff and extra rinsed it, removed all her teddies and am just being careful with her for a bit.

My daughter reacts like this to egg? Has she been tested for that?
