Hi everyone
Sorry if I ramble, but I am a first time poster, it is early in the morning and I am feeling really miserable.
I wanted to b/f ds, but really struggled and so had to use formula (Aptamil). He was fine until he caught a tummy bug five weeks ago. Then he got the runs, which stayed for a fortnight. The doctor said that he might be temp. latcose intolerant as a result of the bug and prescribed Wysoy. I really didn't want to put him on soya (things I read here about it being bad for an under 6 month old), so asked her for LF milk instead.
Unfortunately, ds hated it. Refused point blank to touch it, so I reluctantly gave him the soya. This seems to have done the trick. However, he isn't putting on as much weight as before and even the HVs seemed to hate the idea of soya. They said to give him three weeks and try his own milk again today...and I gleefully did. After three bottles of it, the runs are back now and my ds can't sleep. I am so hacked off now, as I shall have to put him back on the soya for now.
I am really hoping that someone out in mn world knows of a third way!!! He won't drink SMA LF, likes Wysoy (but I don't) and his Aptamil is running straight through him. Any ideas anyone please???? I know my doc wants to keep him on soya, but I have been frightened off by postings here while he is still so young.
Please, please advise me so that I can go to the docs a bit more savvy than I am now!!!! I am riddled with guilt about bringing back his tummy upset and ruining his sleep, filling him with soya when it isn't good for him and failing to bf so bringing this all on in the first place .

don't feel guilty. You've tried to breast feed, you're trying to do the best you can for your son - what more can you do? Its not your fault you can't get better advice from the professionals. Have you tried Pepti Junior or Enfamil Lactofree - you could show the list at www.paediatricgastroenterologist.co.uk/paed_nutrition.htm to your gp ? I know a family using Pepti Junior and it was the one they preferred to nutramigen/ neocate.

When changing any milk you may have to do it gradually - mix a quarter of new milk with 3/4 of the old then half and half, then 3/4 new.

The other thing you can try is probiotics, which are excellent for diarrhoea. You'd probably need to order from the web. Lots on other threads about them.

Thanks.... I feel a bit more balanced this morning. I had searched for other LF milks and found nothing though, so thanks a million for your web list. I shall take this to the GP and see what they say.

stairs dont want to upset u either re soya , my god, i hope i havent

these other suggestions hopefully will work for you.

stairs · 06/01/2006 16:39

Hermykne...you have not worried me at all - I am really grateful. I had half heard about all of that anyway which is why I am so concerned. Thanks for sending me the link, I feel a bit more armed now. I worry about the doc thinking I am neurotic, so it is good to have something solid to show them.
Thanks anniemac too, might give the LF another shot and be a bit more firm about it. Strangely, ds has decided today that he doesn't want anything to do with the Wysoy either. He arches his back and screams when offered it, and drank 6oz at 8am, 2oz at 2 and 2oz just now. Not really enough for a growing boy. Either he is still feeling delicate from last night or he has been reminded how good his old milk tasted in comparison and is holding out for that!

my dd also got temporary lactose intolerance from a tummy bug, my doc said not to put her on soya till we had seen paed. she had contant runs for 8 weeks (needing a full outfit change twice a night) she got better 2 days before we saw the paed and is now fine again. the paed said if a stomach bug destroys the stomach lining it can take 6-8 weeks to regrow. prehaps continue soya for a couple more weeks???

starlover · 06/01/2006 21:15

stairs... aptimil really didn't agree with my ds. made him quite sick and runny poo.

have you tried other normal formulas? we get on best with cow and gate organic

stairs · 06/01/2006 21:53

Moopie and Starlover - thanks.
After reading your messages I might leave him a couple of days and try another milk and see how ds gets on with that before I go back to the docs. I guess another week on soya is not too much - he has been on it for three weeks anyway.

By the way Moopie, how old was your dd when she got ill?

Probiotics are brilliant at helping with temporary lactose intolerance. Please get some and try them.
