Egg allergy advice please?

Hi everyone

DD2 5yo has now got an egg white protien (highest level apparently) allergy, to add to all the others. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with this. Also confused and worried. Didn't ask half as many questions as I should have done when at the hospital yesterday.

She has been eating cakes/buns without any worries. Though, when I think about it this does make her eczema much worse and also gives her a red blotchy face, ringed eyes etc.

Those of you with egg allergic children, do you avoid all egg products and anything containing egg?

They want me to exclude egg from her diet totally for 4 weeks to see if this helps with her skin/swollen red itchy face. She has almost constantly got an upset tummy (if you know what I mean!!), so also to see if it helps with this?

Don't know what I'm asking really, just feeling a bit overwhelmed and worried for DD.

Maybe some general advice and maybe some egg free recipies (she is going to miss her cake !!).

Thanks so much everyone.

My dd is 5 and has been egg free since about a year old. At one stage we had introduced buns etc with egg but she had a massive reaction to raw egg (accidental exposure) and after that she started reacting to even tiny amounts.

I do a lot of baking and tend to make biscuits/cookie quite a bit as there are many free recipes. I use an egg substitute sometimes but not sure it makes much difference.

Here are some recipes I use.

On the egg free baking site there is a good condensed milk chocolate cake I make for parties.

I think the advice is good - to exclude all egg and start from there. It may be that you can reintroduce baked egg (ie cooked at a high temp for a long time, like in cakes), but you need to start from a baseline of zero egg to see what the effect might be.

Baking without egg is fine once you get used to it. Google any vegan cake recipes. I can recommend books by this author. Muffins are easier than big cakes, eg this book here I use all the time, and tells you how much extra liquid to use instead of the egg. They are always yumtastic. Happy baking!

And yes to your other question - we exclude all egg, even packets reading 'may contain' etc, as studies have shown that quite a high proportion of these do actually have the 'may contain' item in. Shopping takes a long time!

My DS is allergic to egg but has never eaten it (he's 4). We already knew he was allergic to milk and wheat as a baby so I was worried about introducing egg during weaning and just dabbed a bit of raw egg on his cheek which immediately came up in horrific hives. His skin and blood tests have subsequently confirmed that he is very allergic so we avoid all products containing egg. I assume that at some point in the future if his test results improve they will do an egg challenge with him, starting with baked egg, but no idea when that will be. I don't bake I'm afraid mainly because I'm rubbish and hate cooking but DS doesn't like sweet stuff anyway so no point. I did make a free from fruit crumble last summer but he hated it!
