Feel a bit daft posting this but I am trying ds with potato. He is allergic to cashews and egg, has been tested for a load of other stuff but all came back negative. Whenever I ate potato or tomato (he's breastfed) he would suffer with stomach pain and produce a green mucousy nappy after which he was fine again. The last time I ate cherry tomato - about 3 months ago I think - the skin on his bottom was bleeding when I changed him Sad. It was fine by the next nappy change. I should add, I eat a chinese meal with okay sauce (based on tomato puree) every friday and that has no effect on him at all. Other than that I avoid tomato and potatoes.

We saw Adam Fox last month who said it was quite common for this to happen, but for the child to be fine when they eat it themselves. So far I've managed with giving a variety of fruit and veg as well as dairy and wheat, but i know I've got to branch out a bit and start giving something more like proper meals, but I'm so nervous about giving potato!

So far, I've rubbed a bit on the back of his neck, and put a tiny bit the size of about half a grain of rice on his tongue with no reaction but now I've got to try a bigger bit. He has had a tiny dose of cetirizine this morning - which Dr Fox said would not mask, but lessen, any reaction - but I would know by now if he was going to react, wouldn't I?

Well now he's decided to have a nap so I have loads of extra time to worry about giving him the next lot!

I don't have any experience of those kinds of reactions to breastmilk, but it sounds like you're doing all the right things. Just keep taking it very slowly (and keep an eye on him while sleeping in case of any bad signs).

good luck!

Thanks Weta, I keep popping into the bedroom every ten mins just to check - I'm so paranoid its ridiculous! I long to just stick something in his mouth without having heart failure!

Okay so I woke him up accidentally Hmm and he's now on his third taste with no effects so far. It doesn't help that he wants to feed himself so keeps trying to grab the spoon before it goes into his mouth, always pulls a face as though he's being poisoned when I give him a new food, and is constantly chewing his fingers so I can't see what's going on in his mouth!!

Fingers crossed but we seem to be doing okay so far...

Sounds like he's doing really well, and so are you. Try to focus on all the nice things you can give him if it goes well. Chips!!!

lukewarmmama · 24/11/2011 11:34

By the way, sounds very odd, reacting to it in BM but not if eaten directly. The whole world of allergies is very odd though Smile

I also had a bit of paranoia regarding potato, just a few weeks ago, because I'd read about deadly nightshade stuff, and DS had weird nappies for about a week. Turned out it was just a bug he got at nursery (well, at least that's my theory now!). But when I reintroduced potato I started out with things I had cooked in potato flour (an ingredient in Doves Farm gluten-free plain flour, which I get anyway cos DS allergic to wheat). Then I tried with a couple of microchips Blush, then some baked potato, and then he scoffed a bunch of new potatoes and was fine!
Don't worry, sounds like you're doing the right thing. I'm all for paranoia (in moderation) -- best way to keep your little one safe!

CasaBevron · 24/11/2011 11:47

Indeed! Dr Fox said they had no idea why it happens, it just does - good scientific explanation if ever I heard one! No vomiting or anything so far, so I'll just keep an eye on his nappies before I give any more. Thanks for the moral support ladies Smile

X-posted with you, Garliclover. Glad your little one can now eat chips - they deserve a few treats with all they have to put up with!
