Been prescribed this today for a 15 week old baby with infected cradle cap on his face, have read online that its too harsh for a young baby. Anyone used it?

Thank you, im not going to use it. Its not even his head, its his face so theres no way Im putting something that strong onto his already damaged skin.

It does look like cradle cap, but he doesnt have it on his head, and until yesterday it looked like excema. The health visitor I saw friday said it was excema, so I dont know.

He's on soya milk as had so many problems with every other milk we tried, although Ive read that babies have similar reactions on soya. Maybe I should look into a different formula then if it doesnt clear up. Thanks again

Ditto what babybarrister said. My DS's 'cradle cap' also turned out to be severe eczema made worse by his undiagnosed allergies. If it was genuine cradle cap, I would recommend rubbing lots of olive oil onto the scalp about an hour before bathtime and then simply washing it off in the bath (the scales should lift off once softened). Lots of the specialist shampoos for cradle cap are very harsh and quite unnecessary in my opinion as genuine cradle cap may be unsightly but does not affect the baby in any way (not itchy etc).

see this makes me think its not cradle cap no. Its not on his scalp at all, its his forehead and the sides of his face, and it must be itchy as he's scratched at it. Think il go back to the doctor tomorrow

Same here. DS2 had terrible exzema/cradle cap and it completely cleared up after we realised his allergies and dealt with them. We had to push to be taken seriously though.

Thank you Babybarrister, youve been so helpful, I hadnt thought of switching formula again. Ive binned the nizoral, theres no way I was using that on him. Ive spoken to the doctor, they want him to have 2 weeks of antibiotics before they see him again as there was an infection in the skin. Ive gently rubbed all the 'cradle cap' with a warm flannel and its mostly gone now, the reddness has gone (guessing due to antibiotics) and he's just left with very dry skin and lots of scratch marks. It looks a million times better than it did a couple of days ago so now I really dont know if it was cradle cap as surely you wouldnt be able to rub it off like that if its exzema. I dont know, what do you think? Doctors have given me a apt for Nov 8th so will talk about switching formula then if im still concerned.

Wow - this brings back very raw memories. My little multiple allergic son was also around 3 months when he was prescribed nizoral for cradle cap - 4 weeks later he was admitted for over a week during christmas with a weeping, burnt little head where we began to discover just how many allergies he was suffering from. Nizoral should never have been prescribed for an infant - wierdly enough my mobile phone was sent in for repair last week and found some old text messages to my husband from almost 3 years ago now ' He can't sleep as his head is so inflamed, I am lying in the dark, trying to hold his hands down to stop his itching. Mom says it looks like allergic eczema, his head is so raw - furious that we were prescribed that shampoo'.

If I can also help in any way, please let me know.
Babybarrister - been meaning to try reach you about another issue that I am hoping you can help with...if you could please send me an email [email protected], would really appreciate it. Thanks

thank you both, i am so glad I didnt use that shampoo. Cant believe they prescribe it for babies. After saying he looks better last time I was on here, it seems to have gone down hill again. I feel really stupid for not even knowing if its cradle cap or eczema, but nothing Im doing is making it go away so Im ringing doc again first thing in the morning. Will speak to them about his milk.

Have also had similar experience in same spots and same age, was infected eczema - needed steroids to control then long term moisturising. Is also allergic to CMP/Egg, although in our case the allergens didn't seem to cause the eczema - just had both things.

For the skin we can fucidin (antibiotic cream) and at one point a cream which was antibiotic plus steroid. Try to catch the inflamed patches early to avoid oral ABs....
Glad it is better
