Weetabix intolerance?

DD (8.5 months old) has had constipation on and off since weaning. I read here that Weetabix might help and it has (hurrah!)
But now i wonder if she might be intolerant - her skin goes very red where the Weetabix has touched her face, and (coincidence?) she's had a fever the last 2 days (she's had Weetabix for 3 days).
Obviously she's not having any more for now, but has this happened to anyone else?

My DD used to come up in a funny rash around her mouth when she ate weetabix. I took her off all wheat for a few months (from 8mths to about 13 months) and I gave her porridge instead.

Funny you should say this a couple of months ago i started giving my 2 year old dd weetabix for breakfast and her cheeks had a funny red rash on them until i realsied it was weetabix that was causing it and stopped giving it to her, I dont think it was wheat that was the problem as she is fine with pasta and other stuff.

Yup, many people leave weetabix till after a year, it can cause vomiting, funny tummy ect. Ready Brek goes down a treat and you can add a bit of jam or fruit compot with it.

What is it about Weetabix then? Is it a wheat intolerance or something else?

h23 · 23/12/2005 19:46

Thanks! I don't think it's wheat/gluten, as she's been fine with bread, pasta, oats, etc.
To be honest, we only used it to help with the constipation. Will have to move onto the next remedy now...
Readybrek sounds good, but as we live in Germany, not sure if we can get it here.

It's weird isnt it i wonder what causes it.

Weetabix is not very processed - so more likely to cause a reaction than bread or pasta.

I would leave all wheat until a year because she has shown this reaction.

My ds had hives, swelling and projectile vomiting after 1/4 weetbix. He was 7 months old and had previously had a little toast on two occasions without problem. Skin testing at 9 months showed a low allergy to wheat . We avoided wheat until 2nd skin testing at 14 months showed nil allergy, then introduced organic bread and other processed wheat without problems. Have still not given him weetbix and he is now 2yrs 3 months. He was fine with porridge.

Am in oz and advice is weetbix is suitable for 6 months on. DS is my 3rd child and no previous problems so thought would be okay. My advice now would be definitely leave until 12 months.

singersgirl · 26/12/2005 10:21

Some people/children can tolerate processed wheat but not whole wheat (or only small amounts of whole wheat). So pasta and white bread/brown bread (rather than wholemeal) might be OK, but Weetabix everyday will not.

ds2 developed a wheat allergy after having weetabix at 7m old, and was 2 1/2 before he could have wheat again

bobbybobbobbingalong · 26/12/2005 16:48

I had a course of antibiotics and couldn't eat wheat of any sort for around 3 months, and then no wholemeal for a year. I can eat brown bread now, but the very wholemeal, worthy heavy bread is still beyond my poor stomach.
