Latex allergies

It appears that DD1 is allergy to Latx, she had her ears pierced and where the glove would have touched her face and round the back when the piercer was cleaning her ears, she has come out in a rash with red blisters, its not the piercing as that is fine. She also reacts to plasters.

I found this on a website

Delayed hypersensitivity presents as a chemical allergy. The skin area affected becomes dry, crusty and leathery with eruptions appearing as sores and blisters. This response occurs between six and 48 hours after contact. Repeated latex exposure causes the skin condition to expand beyond the area of contact. Many people with delayed hypersensitivity have a history of atopy (allergy, dermatitis, or asthma).

What should I do, and can they test for Latx allergy? She is under the hospital as she has Cerebral Palsy, so should I tell them??

Bobbybob is normally around at this hour, keep bumping, she has a latex allergic child and may tell you more about it.

I think is a good idea to tell people in the hospital, after all, latex is always at hand in hospitals...

should I get a medic braclet? I knew she reacts to plasters, but didn't think about Latx because the doctors at the clinic don't use gloves as they only check her walking gait.

Get a medic alert bracelet - it's the first thing that people check for in an emergency, and she is more likely to have a bad reaction to latex if she is already ill (which she would be if you had called an ambulance and gone to the emergency room).

Ds has visited me in hospital, but my room was cleared of latex gloves, then wet dusted then non latex gloves brought in. If your daughter spends a lot of time in/at hospital they should know so they can minimise the risk.

Also tell her dentist, speak to your supermarket about if they use latex gloves to put out the fruit etc. Every situation you can avoid, avoid.

Rubber bands, swimming caps, visible elastic in knickers, some erasers, balloons should all be avoided.

Latex free plasters are available in the UK, but I have to get my mum to send me them.

You can have a RAST test for latex. Ds has a skin prick test and it was negative, but I pushed for a RAST test and it was clear he was allergic.

Oh and no bananas, kiwifruit or avocado for latex allergic people - they cross react and can make the allergy worse. There is another more scary long list - but you only have to avoid those if they give you symptoms, if not you are fine to eat them.

Anything else - fire away.

I informed the Special need playscheme today, andthey have made a note on her profile. Looking at Medic alert bracelets atm, seen one on the offical website that is on a flowery strap which I think she will love.

That one is lovely.

is it worth ordering one until she is tested?? I know she rescts to plasters, and to gloves.

If you know she reacts to the most obvious things - gloves and plasters then you don't need a test to get her a medic alert bracelet. You can put other medical conditions on it too.

she still has the rash, felt awful because I was just wiping the earlobes but she doesn't wash that well yet, and the latex was still on her skin until we (me and piercer) realised what it was, now I have cleaned it all up with cooled boiled water and applied creams she seems happier and the rash is slowly going
