I have been trawling google for a cake that ds could have, but whilst there were lots. That avoid some of the things he's allergic to I'm struggling to find one that avoids all. Can anyone recommend a recipe (for a pretty rubbish cook Blush ? Or a sensibly priced one that I could buy?

We like Mrs Crimble?.

dutch apple cake. It has rye flour in it, not wheat so is v low in gluten. Keeps forever until you open it but still v nice. Some Sainsburys sell them.

Youcan't do it.

Ds1 has wheat and dairy intolerance. When we had to avoid egg to it became impossible. You cannot make a cake without egg and gluten

acsec · 02/10/2011 21:22

How about vegan cake lots of recipes here and use gluten free flour?

acsec · 02/10/2011 21:23

Many types of wheat and gluten free flours

tiredfeet · 02/10/2011 21:27

He's ok with gluten, just needs to avoidd wheat. Thank you for all the responses already Smile

The flour website states whether the flour is wheat free, gluten free or both.

How about a profiterole-style tower of rice crispie (or similar) cakes made with soya- and dairy-free chocolate? You could stick mini sparklers in the edges with a candle on top to make it a bit more exciting and decorate the tops of the rice cakes with things he can eat - mini marshmallows/glace cherries/fancy dried fruits/sweets etc.

Depending on how old he is (and I don't know if this would really work - you may have to practise) could you make blocks of the mixture and then shape it into a train/favourite object with a knife etc. and then decorate with sweets to make windows/wheels and so on?

Ooh and I've just found this white chocolate that looks like it might be suitable. It could give contrast. Good luck!

I can't recommend piginthekitchen highly enough if you haven't discovered it already. Perhaps not quite birthday cake stuff, but the apple cake is amazing. It is possible, pagwatch! Smile

Yes you can Pagwatch! You are right that you can't make a light victoria sponge but you can make a dense, moist cakes.

There is a recipe for Chocolate Mud Cake in a book by Lola Workman (Wheat and Gluten-free home cooking). It uses a mix of flours, although it still works ok with Dove's farm gluten free flour, and I have always made it with egg replacer instead of eggs. It makes no difference as the recipe includes sweet potato which seems to bind it together anyway and the end result is supposed to be dense and sticky. It has always been a big hit, in fact friends with no dietary restrictions (imagine that world eh?!) have asked for the recipe...

In the same vein I have also made a Nigel Slater lemon polenta cake with egg replacer (no wheat in recipe, just almonds and polenta). In fact i also replaced the almonds with Dove's farm as DD can't do nuts either (or sesame or mustard - sigh). Same principle - the cake is sticky and moist so you don't miss the airy lightness that you get from both egg and gluten.

Having said that, I have also made some freefrom disasters...DD's first bithday cake had the look and consistency of brown sand. Just about tipped me over the edge but it's improved since!

That is interesting nomoremrtumble.
When ds2 couldn't tolerate eggs I spent months trying to find a recipe in vein.

He can manage now. But I am glad to see theta is a solution. Gluten and egg free felt very difficult tbh. Ds2 was pretty glum

Thank you for all the ideas. Its for his first birthday so I know in one sense its a bit bonkers to fuss as he won't notice, but I feel like I should start trying ideas now, so I am ready for subsequent birthdays, plus I'm feeling a bit emotional about it as when he had his first massive reaction six months ago it shook me so much and makes me want to really celebrate him reaching one year.

We've decided to order a few blocks of the mrs crimbles cake for this year and decorate it ourselves, and then try out some of these recipes over the course of the year, ready for next year. Will also make rice crispie cakes too I think, nursery made them with him so he could join in with the 'baking' session and I he loved them

Hi! There are a few vegan cake makers who will do a spelt or completely gluten free cake. Look here - www.vegancakedirect.co.uk and here. I had a cake once from here made from spelt that was very good! Also, orgran and cherrybrook kitchen has a range of gluten free cake mixes. You can find them at whole foods and goodnessdirect.co.uk.

mum2twoloudbabies · 30/10/2011 09:10

these are exactly what we have to avoid (except soya ds can tolerate small amounts) I used Mrs crimbles muffin and sponge mix and pure dairy free sunflower spread and silken tofu instead of egg it was lovely. I think it would work just as well with an egg replacer powder though.

DS doesn't like cake, so for birthdays I would make a tower of flapjacks/rice crispie cake type things for him. You can make quite impressive displays if you use an old-fashioned cake stand and add decorations. you can also make choc flapjacks by adding cocoa/melted choc. (my recipe for flapjacks only uses butter or margarine, oats and brown sugar) HTH p.s I know it feels more difficult if the choice is not voluntary.
