my 14month old was diagnosed with milk allergy at 4 months then soya and just tested for gluten. had 2 tests back, the RAST for nuts was negative and his Ige was in the normal range. i thought this picked up food allergies and was very accurate. does this mean my son hasnt got any food allergies, even though with some foods and medicines he has come out in hives. havent got cealiac one back yet.

Sorry can't help - only have access to skin testing not RAST testing. Bumping for you though.

well this is just my understanding but the bad news is it doesn't mean he doesn't have a gluten problem, or a lactose intolerance. The good bit is that if his rast test was negative there's a good chance he's outgrown other allergies.

The RAST test only tests IgE levels. IgE is high with some things most people call allergies but not with others (like gluten and lactose intolerance). Also it isn't 100% accurate and children who appear to have outgrown allergies can be resensitised if exposed to whatever food bothered them. The only test that is totally reliable is giving them the food or medicine (under medical supervision) and seeing if there is a reaction.

Sorry not a lot of help but it is sort of optimistic.

It will only pick up the allergies for which it has been tested. It can't tell you about other foods because they use a different serum to test each allergy, it won't pick up any allergy that has not been tested for.
