Or am I completly barking up the wrong tree? (or maybe just barking ) DS2 who is 14 mths has never been a great sleeper but in last 6 weeks or so has been terrible, crying for about 2 or 3 hrs on and off. Think it's his tummy and that he has trapped wind as when he starts letting out some right rip roaring trumps! He did have reflux up till about 11 mnths - the sicking sort as opposed to the silent. He's very irritable in the day but this might be due to his late night goings on! He has a review next week at hospital for reflux and just wondered if anyone had any suggestions. Don't know if this is relevant but he poos loads! (Not diarhea, sorry for spelling, just loads of poo!)

Thanks spod - I've been trying to cut down on gluten to see if it makes a difference before we go back to the hospital for his reflux check up and it does seem to have made a difference. We also went back to using baby milk instead of cows milk and that also seems to have helped - fingers crossed!

We're still waiting at 3 Spod. having been told the same thing. Now we get chin scratching and "oh, he's a sensitive wee chap isn't he?"

I've given up hoping that at a magical point in the future it will all be okay. People keep saying "Oh, he might be okay when he starts school" and this would be lovely. But it might not happen.

His life is far from rubbish - I think how horrible some children must feel after eating bright orange food, but not know why and think in a lot of ways he is lucky.

Oats don't actually have gluten in them - it's just that some coeliacs can tolerate them and others can't. barley deffo has gluten.

I ignored the 5 or 6 thing - they are just guessing, and they will be right more often than not - but it doesn't help if it's not your child.

mymama · 18/12/2005 22:18

I thought oats were gluten too.

Gastroenterologists seem curiously reluctant to accept the evidence that oats, which contain avenin not gluten, have no role in coeliac disease. A further Scandinavian study has examined 93 child coeliac disease patients randomly placed on an oat-free or oat-containing gluten-free diet, and found there was no difference in symptoms nor in intestinal structure or function when oats were included.

Small intestinal biopsy was performed before and after the study, and the participants' plasma was monitored for IgA antigliadin, antiendomysium and transglutamase levels at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months. Average oat intake in the oat group was 15 g/day at 6 and 12 months of the study.

Since the inclusion of oat products would greatly improve the acceptability of a gluten-free diet, it is odd that so many people still refuse to accept these findings.

However apparently there is a large risk of cross contamination from other cereals - but I can't understand why rice flour, millet etc. would be okay given that!

Bobbybob

lots of respect to you for your fabulously researched and referenced datat! (this is not meant to be sarcastic or patronised, i'm just really impressed. your ds is very lucky to have you.)

bobbybobbobbingalong · 19/12/2005 08:34

Only did a google

mymama · 19/12/2005 23:51

The lack of spelling mistakes impressed me most!!!! I was going off the fact that my Uncle Toby's one minute oats said they contained gluten. Only ingredient is rolled oats. Should know better than to trust labels at this point really.

Nightynight · 20/12/2005 07:03

spod, how did you get your dd diagnosed with gluten and egg intolerance?
just curious, I was diagnosed with similar as an adult.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 20/12/2005 08:50

Probably the Uncle Toby's are contaminated at the site, and therefore contain gluten from another cereal. I would call them and ask.
