Any experience of kiwi fruit allergy in babies?

following on from my somewhat panicky thread yesterday, I feel sure that kiwi was the cause of dd's violent vomitting (40 mins after eating it). She retched and vomitted for about 1 3/4 hours solid and has been fine since, no other signs of illness. In the last couple of years I have had similar reactions to prawns and bananas which is what made me think of it as a possible reaction. Is a GP going to take me seriously or laugh me out of the door? She's 12 mo and has had kiwi before.

Kiwi is quite a common trigger for allergies - the GP won't laugh at you.

I am allergic to kiwi and pineapple myself. It has only happened since I reached puberty!

funnyonion · 23/11/2005 20:29

My DS ate a kiwi the other week and had a strange reaction, not as severe as your DD but he was retching for a about 5mins afterwards. I put it down to the kiwi not being particularly ripe. I sometimes find that my mouth itches a bit after eating kiwis.DH suggested giving him some bread and this seemed to help.

my ds was violently sick and went floppy(aged 11 months) and ended up in hospital after eating kiwi, docs said it was a virus.......unfortunately i believed them(never again though!!!)
ds was at nursery and apparently stole a piece of kiwi from his friends plate(aged 14 months)and was violently sick again(i actually phoned the nursery manager at home about 8pm at night as i could see kiwi pips in the vomit and knew that i hadn't given it to him)
and she double checked with the carers and confirmed that he had ate two slices.....
so i think i can safely say that he has a reaction when eating kiwi....
the nursery have since banned kiwi fruit from whichever room ds is in(they also did some'internet research'and apparently it's common for 1 in 70 people to be allergic to kiwi as it's not just classed as an exotic fruit now aday but 10-20 years ago it was

Thanks for your responses, next question is what would or should a GP do if I take her and they take me seriously?

im allergig to kiwi but it only kicked in while pg dont know if i would still have a reaction

I read somewhere you should be careful with citrus fruit and babies. Kiwi fruit is best introduced around the age of 3. Not sure if true. I gave mine from early on because I didn't know and they were fine, so don't take my word for it!

northender · 23/11/2005 21:15

I heard that it should be left until 1 yr unfortunately that was after she'd eaten quite a bit of it as a fairly early weaning food as she liked it so much, now I feel a tad guilty and responsible . Sometimes I think parenthood is just one long guilt trip!

my friend has a book as her child is multi-allergic and if I remember rightly kiwi was in the same group as strawberry which alot of people are allergic to.

bobbybob · 24/11/2005 01:45

Kiwi, banana and avocado are all out for my ds because he is allergic to latex. His symptom is massive vomitting. The Doctors main problem is that as his stomach stops working (on purpose as a self defence mechanism) giving him oral antihistamine or steroids is not very effective.

I'm not sure the doctor can do anything that you can't do yourself (buy piriton, keep an eye out 4-6 hours later for another reaction) - though you may want to be careful with balloons, latex dummies, teats etc. just in case - as the cross reaction can work the other way.

Thanks for all your comments and info. One more question-Would an allergic reaction like that cause her to be off her food and just not quite herself iyswim, for a couple of days?

I would think that almost 2 hours of retching and vomiting would put her off for a while. The allergic reaction is causing all kinds of things to happen in her body to cope with the kiwi and I feel that it would take a while for her to feel 100% again.

spagblog · 29/11/2005 12:10

funnyonion - that is how my allergy started, a bit of itching, then a tickly feeling at the back of my throat, then a hoarsness of voice, and the last time I licked my finger after cutting one up I felt my throat swelling.
Arghhh!

onlyjoking9329 · 03/12/2005 21:44

i was allergy tested for kiwi and was told latex is relative to kiwi so have to aviod latex i react to bananas and tomatoes too.

NannyL · 04/12/2005 00:24

ive also heard its very commmon to be allergic to kiwi...

if ever i eat them i fell like my lips have blown up huge (tho in the mirro they look the same) so i dont eat thme anymore either

katymac · 04/12/2005 00:27

Kiwi and strawberries are on the list that C/Mers must not give children without ensuring the parents have tried first - however this doesn't sound very reassuring as it seems to affect people at different ages

bobbybob · 04/12/2005 00:35

It would perhaps be more useful if they had them on the list as foods that parents had tried more than twice.

katymac · 04/12/2005 07:23

Is twice the "rule"

There seem to be people on here who became "allergic" much later in life?

SpaGlorytoBlog · 04/12/2005 07:38

I used to love eating Kiwi fruit. I only became allergic to them as an adult. Is it normal to grow into allergies? My mum also developed a viscious allergy to a vitamin this year

NannyL · 04/12/2005 22:54

Yes allergies only happen AFTER youve been exposed to it.

Theoretically you can become allergic to anything youve ever had AFTER youve had it, and it doesnt matter if youve had it once or 100+ times, you can still become allergic to things!

(tho i would assume it wouldnt suddenly becoem very severe if youve eaten all these things all your life (tho im only hypothesising on that one, feel free to correct me!))
