Allergic reaction in Ds when he sleeps

He is 3 and has been ill with a bad cold for which he now has antibiotics. The last 3 nights he has come out in hives when he sleeps. They are bothering him and he wakes up crying. They calm down in the day.

There has been no new washing powder or anything so can't work out what is happening.

? new latex pillow?

New jamas/bed linen? DS has allergy to new clothes if not washed first

Are the a/b in tablet form? Sometimes a person can be allergic to what the active ingredient is mixed with? I would speak to a pharmacist.

It could be the antibiotics - you should check that as that's serious.

But it might be stuff in the air that gets on his sheets. There is a time of year where I can't dry my son's sheets outside or he'll wake up with a swollen face. I find if I tumble dry them (not just dry them indoors), it doesn't happen.

Ds gets hives and swollen face when he sleeps somewhere that house dust is really bad.

I wonder if the ab's have made him more sensitive to an allergen?

I would probably ask the advice of a pharmacist though, in case it is the meds.

When you say the rash 'calms down' in the day, does it completely go, or is still visible but not bothering him...? Could it be a post-viral rash? My DS (who is mildly asthmatic, but with no particular significant allergies) always get patches of blothcy spots, especially on his chest, back and legs after any and all viruses. The tend to appear 7-10 days after the original bug starts and can be very itchy - enough for him to draw blood during the night, but the itchiness increases at night and they are less of a bother (though still visible) in the daytime. First breakout was before he was an the a/b's so not that. I had wondered if it was post viral.

Could the Hives be due to him getting hot?

Beddings been mentioned but another here who has to tumble or or gets a DS with puffy eyes in the morning.

I would visit GP because if the illness is viral and viral rash them maybe they could stop the A/B's? It may help?

Could be heat actually, he has this toy stuffed lion that he insists on sleeping on but it makes him really hot. I have moved it away now that he is asleep so hopefully that might help. Also washed his security blanket just in case.

Put the toy lion in the freezer for 24 hours. That will kill any dust mites on it that could be causing a problem.

All bedding should be washed at 60+ degrees also to get rid of any mites. I've never had much luck washing pillows, so ds has a new one every now and again.

I know it may not be dust mites but all the above are easy to do, so maybe worth a try.

Lion is about the size of the freezer! Luckily it seems to have cleared so freezing of lions won't be required. Must have been post viral.
