DS has just started reception and has mild ezcema on his right hand between his fingers. We keep it at bay by using Jason soap and chickweed mosituriser. Anyway this last week it flared up badly and needed hydrocortizone to calm it all down again. I knew it must be something at school but taking him into the classroom yesterday I saw the teacher with a bucket of soapy water. She then tipped it into the water play table. The next day it suddenly twigged why Ds's hand had flared up and asked her what the bubbles were. She said that it was soap from the soap dispenser in the toilets and showed me yesterdays water which obviously all the bubbles had gone. I then told her about Ds hand and she said all she could do was exclude him from wet play. I asked her why they needed bubbles and she said they always had bubbles. I told her that we used 'kind' soap and she said the school can't afford that. I just feel really mean towards DS as he loves wet play and now he can't. I can't believe with that manky soap in the water that no one elses hands haven't got a reaction either. Does anyone know of a soap that is kind that will also not break the bank, that I could buy for the class?

Actually, I'd be inclined to take things a little further (HT) if the teacher isn't being helpful. It truly wouldn't be that big a deal to not have bubbles in the wet play water. Far more damage done by excluding your son imo.

I know! and I can't believe he's the only one suffering with his skin.

Agree with Aero - bubbles aren't necessary, but including your son in all aspects of play is. I'd take it up with the head teacher if you're not getting anywhere with the class teacher.

Why do they want bubbles? Ds2 is in reception and they don't have bubbles for the same reason you've said.

I don't understand why they have to have bubbles in the water. It's not fair that your ds should miss out.

Just to say, I think it's a fab idea (& generous) of you to buy soap for the class. What do you use at home? Could you not buy that soap? Sorry I don't have a specific recommendation. I did recently discover, however, something called Waitrose PURE foam bath, but didn't notice how much it costs. It's apparently perfume & colour free.

I use Jason soap but it's £7 for 887ml (30oz) so not cheap! But I suppose one squirt a day would last them a while.

Can the teacher rinse your ds's hands afterwards - it makes an enormous difference to my ds.

Now on the exclusion business. If it's educationally necessary to play in soapy water then they need to make it safe for him. If it's not necessary then the others won't miss out if it is plain water will they. Either way excluding the child (from the activity) is the absolute last option.

Hoorah! Went in this morning to 'have a word' the teacher informed me that she will longer use soap and has swapped it for............food colouring! I can feel a thread comming on about how do you get green colouring out of trousers
Feel real great that DS can go on playing with the water without getting a really sore hand.

Thanks alot for the thoughts and suggestions

If she dilutes the food colouring into a larger bottle (say 750ml) before putting it in the water then it shouldn't stain anything including her.

Thats good, my dd2's nursery know not to use any red food colouring in their water or playdough, as she has reactions to it. Glad they listened.
