Difference between CMPI and lactose intolerance and implications?

How can you tell the difference between a lactose intolerance and a cow's milk protein intolerance.

Background is DD (7mo) was being sick in the night from excess phlegm for about 6 weeks (since being weaned essentially) which only stopped after cutting out dairy (though only obvious dairy IYKWIM?).

She is bfed, and doesn't seem to react to what I am eating, well, not being sick anyway.

She has also had hives from eating hummus. We've had two incidences where we have forgotten about the dairy. I gave her some omelette with parmesan in it and she came up in hives around her mouth, and yesterday I gave her toast at a baby group without thinking that it had dairy spread. Later she was sick again, though I also gave her omelette (can you tell I am struggling for food ideas!) but without the cheese so maybe we are looking at an egg allergy too?

Is there any difference in terms of what she might tolerate depending on the type of intolerance? She is weaning and I am getting really stuck for ideas with no dairy and no hummus! If it's no egg too I'm not sure what she is going to live on!

might be worth re-posting this in the Q&A with Dr Fox

Have you been to your GP? If she is getting hives I would think that its more of an allergy, rather than an intolerance. If she was to have a skin prick test, I bet it would be positive to cows milk protein, just from the fact she is reacting so quickly on contact. I would ask your GP for a referral for an allergy test, and in the meantime, exclude ANYTHING with any milk, or milk products in. The anaphylaxis website has a good list of names of ingredients to avoid.

Thanks for the link, completely missed the webchat!

Dr was spectacularly useless, though haven't seen him since the hives came up as I assumed it was part of the intolerance which my gp doesn't believe in. She also had hives in response to hummus. His advice was 'stop giving her hummus'. And he told me to give her dairy again but prescribed an inhaler for the phlegm.

An intolerance does not involve the immune system so does not produce hives, swelling or breathing problems, these are symptoms of an allergic reaction. An intolerance involves the digestive system and usually causes symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating, wind and vomiting (vomiting can be a symptom of either). Unfortunately my experience is that you have to demand to be referred to a paediatrician and don't give in until your GP makes the referral. It's the only way you're going to sort this out. Good luck x

We have similar issues here. DS one today. For weaning we lived off avocado. You can find dairy and egg free bread - we use the waitrose stoneground as we are dairy, egg and soya free. DS also reacts to houmus due to sesame. I tried a simplified version of the baba ganoush recipe in the blw cookbook and spread that on toast instead. Then pasta, rice, mash, tomato cream and lots if veg. Hope that helps. Do a retrospective, detailed food diary for the last week, take it to the gp and insist you are referred. You're doing really well. While I worked out the dairy issues at 9 weeks it took until 9 months to work out the egg!
