fungal infection of eczema... could it be something else?

DD has been using a prescription cream for an infection of her eczema for a month to very little effect.

Not sure what is going on!

Her whole torso is covered in small red itchy patches, and it's just kept spreading further and further... Confused

It could be a bacterial infection rather than a fungal one, in which case fungicide cream would have no effect.
Has your GP taken a swab and had the infection checked? If not, you might want to take her back and ask him to.

Yes I'm going to take her back this week, but won't be able to get an appointment until tuesday at earliest now. Rather stupidly it hadn't occured to me just how long it had been.

Good idea though... I also vote for any option which isn't an allergy Grin

First of all, if it is all over her body, it is probably not an allergic reaction. Allergies flare up in zones, not everywhere at the same time.

If it is spreading to all her body, could it be a viral infection?

Where is the eczema? Is that what you are calling "red itchy patches" all over her torso?

my dd had that and they prescribed trimovate, said it was a funicide, but it came back, but findin it hard to et appt time to suit, so i borrowed my nieces eczema cream and it has vanished (rash not cream)

She has mild eczema, which is normally kept in control with the usual creams and bath stuff etc, so that her skin seems more or less fine. If she did get a flare up it would be in a rash of lots of small rough patches but only a few mm sized.

This started with a big patch that was rough and itchy all over a good 4cm by 2cm ish it's more or less in the middle of her chest then from that point out she started getting quite big rough patches around 1cm in diameter just on her front to start then spreading out, it's now creeping round onto her back and the tops of her arms. (When we first saw Dr it was only around the centre of the chest)

Dr thought combination of some kind of ringworm type fungal infection that had infected and was making much worse the eczema iyswim.

So have been using anti-fungals and her normal creams and the big patch in the middle has faded quite a bit but the rest doesn't seem affected and is still spreading.

Thinking about it though, she has a steroid cream too that I don't normally need to use, do you think it needs that too?

Why don't you search pictures of various infections and other types of rashes on Google Images and see if your DD's looks similar to any of them?

LaWeaselIsOupaLaDouffe · 30/04/2011 21:43

Because I am not a doctor and rubbish at matching up rash pictures?

I'm asking on MN because I thought somebody else might have had the same experience.

As you wish. In your place, I would be looking at ringworm rash pictures.

LaWeaselIsOupaLaDouffe · 30/04/2011 21:50

It's definately not ringworm. The doctor ruled it out, but thought it was something similar.

But now it seems that wasn't right - unless I needed to use the steroid with the antifungals.

right - in case anyone has the same issue:

We did need the steroid cream too Blush Which I really should have realised, but never mind. 3 days and it's looking much paler and better already.

Could be a form of impetigo/infected eczema. My little boy has quite bad eczema and gets this a lot because kids with eczema are very prone to skin infections and carry higher levels of bacteria on their skin. If it is, then they will need an anti-biotic steriod cream like Fucibet and possibly oral anti-biotics it it's really bad. Will need to be swabbed to check.
