DS (15 months) had a bout of gastric flu last week and has started getting a rash around his mouth after drinking nanny goat milk. He is already allergic to cows - am i going to have switch to soya formula (he doesnt like soya milk so this might be tricky) or might this just be temporary...? should i go to the GP?(ive never bothered with them before but maybe i should...? Anyone had experience of this..?

DS used to have goats milk, then after a few weeks away (without having it), he became intolerant to it. We've been giving him rice milk in the meantime, but slowly reintroduced goats milk this week, and so far he's been fine.

So I would say, give him a few weeks, and then try again. Hopefully it is just a temporary thing.

Goats milk is only slightly better tolerated than cows so if they are allergic to cows they are fairly likely to be allergic to goats.

You can wean from goats to soya in a week or so, by mixing 1 part soya to 9 parts goats then gradually increasing the soya and decreasing the goats!

Now he is over a year you could try the lactose reduced cows milk and see how he gets on with that???

Good luck

BTW - we used the time when he wasn't tolerating goats milk to take him back to the GP. This finally got us a referral to a paed (also having problems with gluten), so we're hoping to get to the bottom of it all.

How long since you tried soy - he might like it now. I gave ds chocolate soy milk once he stopped bfing, and gradually mixed it with normal soy milk to bring the sugar content down a little. Not ideal, but better than nothing.
Rice milk is quite hollow nutritionally but good after a stomach upset.

Personally I would avoid the nanny goat now, and use your doctor to get some formula prescribed.

Do you use probiotics - these would be useful to help heal the gut after the gastric flu.

Thanks bobbybob, laura and soapbox

I'll give rice and soya milk a try (chocolate might work!)and the probiotics is a good idea...

are there different types of soya formula...? any recommendations?

shame about the nanny goat though... ive just bought one of those big expensive tins. I might give it another try in a few weeks

we were told to be very cautious with milk after gastric upset. In fact, the consultant told us to avoid all cow's milk products for a few weeks because often children develop a temporary intolerance after a bad tummy upset (so maybe it is the same for goat's milk?).

I would give him soya for a week or so and then try the nanny stuff again.

I should mention that we were told this as dd (at the time) suffered from several allergies so maybe this does not apply to 'non-allergic' children!
