latex allergy?

A couple of nights ago I woke up around 1.30am suddenly and was gasping for air. Made it downstairs to get some water while my v scared DH called 999. My throat was closing up but by the time the paramedics came my throat and voice began to return to normal.

The last thing I ate (about 11pm) before going to bed were spicy corn puffs, but DH and I were wondering if condoms were the culprit and I'm still a bit tender down below Blush. The a&e doctor was dismissive of that though, gave me antihistamines and sent me on my way.

Could it have been the latex?

In a word Yes

I have a latex allergy, suddenly appeared one day 8 years ago whilst blowing up balloons for my DD's 3rd Birthday. My face swelled and within an hour I looked like a Klingon from StarTrek.

I only get slightly breathless though , it affects my skin more.

Can't touch anything latex, and have had experience of fanjo swelling and feeling on fire due to using a condom.Blush

I alos have to let anyone know when I'm having surgery/medical examinations/dental treatment etc as they use Latex gloves.

Antihistamines usually sort it out.

Have recently sarted using condoms again and have found one type and brand that don't effect me, so we're sticking with them, apparently latex free condoms are awful Grin

You need to get an allergy specialist referral and be tested if you suspect latex allergy, you should also get a medic-alert bracelet as if you were eg in a serious car accident and unconscious then you would be at further risk if the paramedics pulled on latex gloves etc.

Check the ingredients of the spicy corn puffs too - they could contain nut oil and might be the culprit; people can develop an allergy to foods suddenly - I seem to recall Kate Silverton went into anaphylactic shock after eating prawns which she'd had before...

Thanks for the very helpful replies!

Will arrange a GP appointment ASAP. I checked the ingredients of the corn puffs, no nut oils there just vegetable oils and the other ingredients didn't seem questionable to me.

Yes condoms are a bloody nightmare - gimp masks - banana skin - rubber bands - the top of Estee Lauder and most serums which have a squeezy top - seriously so much has bloody latex in - check online.
