Lactose intolerance and severe reflux

dayaapnightaap · 10/04/2011 21:41

Hi there

My DD has suspected lactose intolerance coupled with severe oesophageal reflux with inflammation. She is currently on ranitidine and nutramigen as well as carobel.

Having a bit of a hard time getting medicines sorted and getting conclusive diagnosis so wondered if anyone else had experience of this?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have been there but it was years ago.

Have they done all the normal tests - the poo test for reducing solids being the first one I can think of?

Not much to add except this to shall pass - DD ended up with a different diagnosis and multiple food intolerances but had the reflux, and we ended up on specialist formulas.

She's 12 now and lovely (when she's not being 12 )

The other advice I would give you is look after yourself as well.

Hi there

Thanks for posting. The poo was the first thing to be looked at, it was bright green and not very frequent now she is on nutramigen she is very regular and has gone back to mustard colour.

I know it will all get better, just very hard just now! She is 17 weeks old.

Glad to hear your DD doing well.

They will probably advise early weaning IIRC

I remember how hard it is

Wine helps too

dayaapnightaap · 10/04/2011 22:04

Thanks for hugs and Wine they do help don't they!?

We will be referred to a dietician for weaning, apparently we will have to 'challenge' with dairy.

This week however we have to take DD off the nutramigen to make sure that she really is properly poorly on normal milk I am really dreading it

Oh god help you.

that will be hell.

should I stick earplugs in the post Wink

If this helps, I vividly remember taking DD to the doctor before diagnosis, and getting a young locum who I knew. My exact words were "you have to do something or I am going to kill her"

He said some platitude about it's not that bad is it.

"I know where you live. I will bring her round tonight about 10 and you can have her. You won't be long in bringing her back"

He referred us to the hospital Grin

I know, and DH working away this week!!!

Have stashed a tin of formula in the kitchen so that when she starts I can switch her back on nutramigen straight away.

Slightly different (but probably similar impact) - my ds2 has cows milk allergy and eosinophilic oesophogistis. Eosinophilic oesophigistis is similar in symptoms to reflux even though the cause is different (caused by immune reaction to something eaten/drank). At his worst he will throw up 6+ times per day, every day. He is now almost 3 and has improved over the last year, but it's all relative - he now "only" throws up 5-6 times per week, as opposed to per day.

As someone else said, take care of yourself. It does take its toll.

We are on day two of the normal milk.... horrible unsettled night and revolting nappy. Thanks for your posts and support.

Oh was just thinking about you and wondering how it was going.

(and I don't care if they are un-MNetty I remember what it was like)

Have just noticed this thread. I really feel for you. My DD (now 2.3) had lactose intolerance which was finally diagnosed at 6 months. She had been throwing up and horrible nappies for months and it took many many trips to the docs before we were refered to hospital. They put her on nutramigen but she refused it and 24 hours later we were in hospital for a week as she passed out after being sick. She is now completely recovered and this was through SMA Lactose Free formula and no dairy for 12 weeks and then slowly reintroducing bits of dairy and then milk. When she was weaned this helped a lot as not just milk going in. She had a few steps back, especially when run down but I switched back to lactose free formula and other foods which worked (my idea in the end - not the hospital or doctors) e.g. Dairy free margarine, yoghurt. Nutritionist at hospital ok but most help came from my DD's nursery as they had to feed other lactose intolerant children.

As others have said, take care of yourself, drink wine and keep talking to the medics; it will pass but I know it's really really hard at the moment (I remember well). Lots of hugs and thoughts.
