Secondary lactose intolerance following antibiotics

just wondering if there is anyone else out there with a similar experience who can offer some much needed words of comfort... My 12 week old son was diagnosed with secondary lactose intolerance following me bf on antibiotics and then him having antibiotics himself (a double whammy!) at 7 weeks of age.

He went from a big, chunky, hungry boy to a windy, irritable baby with the weight dropping off.... Luckily, he responded well to lactose free formula and has been putting the weight back on ever since.

However, after 4 weeks on lactose free formula we were advised to re start 'regular' formula. This led to an almost immediate re-emergence of symptoms (obvious abdominal discomfort, excessive bowel sounds, flatulence, loose mucous stools etc). Gp has advised to carry on on lactose free formula and await referral to dietician. She also mentioned, more than a few times, how 'inferior' the lactose free formula is to 'regular' formula. After making the guilty decision to discontinue bf this news is devastating to me as I just want what's best for my baby - obviously! (re starting bf not an option for me).

I just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience? How was it resolved? Did it have any long term impact on your baby's development/health etc?

I would also be interested to know how 'inferior' the lactose free milk is? Only info i can find on web is from the manufacturer and therefore, I assume, quite biased?

Thank you!

Sorry no actual ex. but just to say i feel yr. pain G.P.s are often influenced by the manufacturers ;we're not cows FFS the proteins in cow's milk are v. large and hard to digest 'cos calves have to stand up as soon as born.
