PIRITON - tablets or syrup

KeepCalmAndCurryOn · 30/03/2011 13:10

My ds (10.5) has a peanut allergy, and we carry Piriton syrup and an Epipen at all times.

The letter from his specialist refers to Piriton tablets, which my pharmacist insists can only be provided to 12 year olds and over.

However, DS is going skiing soon, and I would rather he carry tablets than a (glass) bottle of syrup: they are less cumbersome, and a bottle might break and cut him if he fell.

There is also the whole liquids issue on planes - much easier to have tablets.

As I say, his consultant's care plan does refer to tablets to be 'crunched in the mouth then swallowed after a minute of two'.

Has anyone else provided them for under 12s?

They have been prescribed for my DD aged 10 for urticaria. That was three years ago though so perhaps best to check with your GP.

Thanks Al1son.

Anyone else?

I'm sure the last bottle I had was plastic.

EldonAve · 30/03/2011 19:35

Can't help on the tabs but if you get generic boots own version of piriton it's in a plastic bottle

Also provided the bottle/box have the prescription label on it's no problem to take on the plane

MillsAndDoom · 30/03/2011 19:36

Totally off topic but I still dont understand why they can't put it in sachets like calpol. Would make life so much easier

EldonAve · 30/03/2011 19:41

There was a FB campaign for sachets

Have a look at the patient information leaflet in the box. I am fairly sure it say 6-12 year olds take half a tablet four times a day.

Failing that ask doctor for a prescription for them

My DS (6yo) has tablets but they're ceterizine and thats his daily AH. He has chlorphenamine (puriton) for reactions which does come in a glass bottle but I carry 2 small plastic botttles with pre measured dose in it (labelled and covered in sticky back plastic - which I took on a plane as they are clear and less than 100ml) He would need a bottle to replenish them if used (obviously!!). These premeasured bottles are then in his allergy bag with his epipens. The bag can be attached to a belt so great for carrying around. (PM tinytalker as I found out its her website I ordered the bag and bottles from)

alypaly · 30/03/2011 19:45

cetirizine is only supposed to be given to over 12 unless prescribed by doc.

heliumballoons · 30/03/2011 21:16

really? I'm sure mine says 6 Confused. I'm going to check as not sure I like the idea of giving a 6yo meds for 12+, 10yo slightly different.

tinytalker · 30/03/2011 21:43

Yes I can help you with small dose medicine bottles and epipen pouches. :)
You'll have to be quick though as I'm going away for Easter.

topiarygal · 30/03/2011 21:58

I'm wanting the undertongue strips - they're so portable, super quick to absorb and - oh well you just gag a bit - they're available in the US at the mo.
I can't trust my 8 year old to know to crunch when he's reacting - but then his reactions accelerate quickly so we take botles of piriton on flights - no one bothers us once they see the epipens in the bag (they get it I reckon - and who's going to blow up their own kids - actually come to think of it maybe another thread for another chat room).
When we ski I have a bum-bag with the epi-pens in and mini plastic bottles of piriton and a ventolin; if he's with the instructor he carries this.
Re the cetirizine for 6-year-olds, a mate of mine had it on prescrip as well -seems the commercial labling is cautious.
good luck!

KeepCalmAndCurryOn · 30/03/2011 22:59

Well, I have bought plastic bottles 100ml each in Boots (meant for shampoo I think) and I think I will decant the syrup into them. With the epipen they will fit his ski-jacket pocket quite well and they can be topped off if necessary.

Many thanks.

checked y ceterizine box and it says 6ys upwards. Checked the internet which says both ceterizine tablets and puriton is for 6yo upwards. Confused

heliumballoons · 31/03/2011 07:36

hey tinytalker Grin I tried the pre measured bottles as you suggested. Brilliant, so easy. Smile Thanks for the advice. (was mumbar)

PS hope you don't mind me telling people it was you - I know you told me on my other thread. Blush

helium...here is the patient info leafletwww.medicines.org.uk/EMC/medicine/17342/XPIL/Zirtek+Allergy+Relief+Tablets/

HTH

alypaly · 31/03/2011 12:31

Helium I have have just looked up the cetirizine leaflet and it does say over six,but I have worked in a pharmacy for many years and Zirtek which is the brand name is not allowed to be sold for use to under 12's.My pharmacvist would not sell it to anyone under 12

chlorpenamine /piriton is fine but would take advice on zirtek.

heliumballoons · 31/03/2011 16:11

Thanks. TBH I've never bought it for 6 yo as on perscription.
