god, the poor, poor guy... it's all over his face and causing him great pain. any tips?

Your poor DH, sounds very painful.

Has he been to the GP? There are various ointments and creams available. Some are rubbish, ime, but there are new ones coming out all the time so worth trying.

I have psoarasis on my scalp and itgets very bad on my hair line. t is very sore at the moment and I am currently trying a scalp ointment to see if it will work.

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 22:13

it was the GP who said it was psoriasis (we had thought it was an allergic reaction). she has given him dermol stuff, which seems okay, and some vitamin d stuff for his skin.

(thing is... it's got SO MUCH worse since the treatment. what's that all about?)

Hulababy · 27/03/2011 22:17

If it has got worse then definitely go back. Sometimes it is trial and error to find the right treatment.

CarGirl · 27/03/2011 22:18

He needs to see a consultant. There are different types of psorasis and it is tricky finding the right stuff for the right person.

FreeButtonBee · 27/03/2011 22:19

I know it sounds mad but sun beds? It's really supposed to help. Once or twice a month in the winter can really help.

Also a high yeast diet can also make it worse. So avoid beer and bread.

MsScarlett · 27/03/2011 22:19

I saw on TV once how people would allow a certain breed of fish in a tank to nibble the dead skin off. No, I am not joking! Apparently they very gently remove the excess skin cells that are characteristic of psoriasis.

Just googled and got this: www.psoriasisfishcure.com/

morethanyoubargainfor · 27/03/2011 22:19

I have this an di have to say dermol can make mine worse. The one thing i swear by is teh body shops hemp range. They used to do a scalp treatment which was the only thing that made my scalp pain free. They stoped doing it but do have hand cream, face cream etc and it is really good. I can't reccommend it highly enough.

I hope your DH is coping with it all, i sympathise i really do.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/03/2011 22:35

He really needs to get a referral to a derm for a clear diagnosis. Facial psoriasis is quite uncommon and probably wouldnt occur without psoriasis on other sites of the body.

tricky area to treat - dermol is not going to get rid of psoriasis, might make it easier to deal with, but clearly not in the case of your dh. steroids thin the skin and you have to be ever so careful near the eyes, so not ideal for the face apart from very mild strengths. Dovonex irritates facial skin like billy-oh. Not sure what else would be used.

Mumbybumby · 27/03/2011 22:39

Your poor DH!
A friend of mine has psoriasis really badly and has tried just about everything. She uses aquaeous cream to wash with instead of soap (can also be used as an emollient cream after the shower on dry skin). She also uses somehow called coal tar, I think, which doesn't smell particularly nice but she swears by it.
She is also on some very heavy duty medicine to keep it under control - is your DH on anything if it is really bad?

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 22:41

thanks girls. he's really suffering with it, i feel terrible for him. not only is it disfiguring (and he is quite a vain chap, tbh Wink) but it gives him terrible pain.

he has a consultant app in a few weeks... although funnily enough we are going on hol the week before so probably (hopefully) it will be a bit better after some sun and salt water.

would you all mind telling me what treatments you have? dh hasn't really got the psoriasis elsewhere... apart from hands. this is why we have always thought it was contact dermatitis.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 22:41

he's using a shampoo called t gel once a week, that's coal tar. i LOVE the smell. Grin

Tillyscoutsmum · 27/03/2011 22:42

There are so many different treatments for psoriasis. If the one he's had isn't working, get back to the GP and try different ones.

FWIW, my mum has suffered with it all her life. She's had all sorts of treatments from the GP. She has spent 10 weeks in the skin hospital having intensive sun and coal tar treatments etc. and the most effective thing she has ever tried is Aloe Vera Gel (99p a tube from H&B or similar).

aitch, I've had a good range - uv, coal tar (love the smell!) lots of steroids, dithranol (not for sensitive areas!!!!), dovonex. salicylic acid. For the scalp coconut oil is quite good for comfort. lush's blonde solid shampoo too.

hands and face is odd as they are areas most exposed to uv. Will be really really interested in what the derm says.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/03/2011 22:48

off to bed now - but quick q (will check back in the am) where abouts on his hands?

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 22:49

ttell me why it's interesting, oybk, you sound all House-ey and mysterious...

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 22:50

ends of fingers, mostly. terrible cracks.

Dilligaf81 · 27/03/2011 22:51

My DH has this (as does DD) and getting out in the sun really does make a difference.

CFAW · 27/03/2011 23:08

My Dad is covered head to toe, he used all the creams and horrible shampoos from the doctors for years with no luck. He now only uses simple and his skin is clear. I also have it but only on my elbows and i can only use lush.

I recommend trying both, good luck i hope he feels some relief soon.

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 23:15

cheers. it does seem to me that the cure currently is making things worse...

OP posts:
Monty27 · 27/03/2011 23:20

There's so many different varieties of psoriasis you have to keep trying different stuff.

Sun and sea salt made mine worse! Mine just went, as quickly and quietly as it arrived (I was covered head to toe for about a year after some deeply shocking bereavements and me in a car accident). I have no idea what I did for it to go, unfortunately, so I can't help really.

I do sympathise, I think it's trial and error. Hope he gets better soon.

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2011 23:22

glad you got better. Smile

Al1son · 27/03/2011 23:22

I know a couple of people who swear by goats milk soap for psoriasis.

I wouldn't do the fish thing because there's a risk or spreading infection. Not that it's an option on your face anyway!

Aqueous cream could be very painful on inflamed psoriasis, especially on his face.

50/50 cream is much less stinging and is quite a long-lasting emollient although I have only used it on eczema for which it is the best.

Monty27 · 27/03/2011 23:23

Oh, I'm sorry Aitch, but I know it works for others. I do sympathise.

Yy it was weird, mine just disappeared Confused wish I knew why so I could share it :(

suzikettles · 27/03/2011 23:31

I've got a friend who uses Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream on her (mild to be fair) psoriasis. She gets it around her hairline and in the corners of her nose etc.

I guess it's the coal tar thing again. Bloody expensive to try on the off chance, but if you've got some it might be worth a go. I wonder if the EA counter would do a free sample?
