Tescos stopping G/F sausages and Fish Fingers

Has anyone else experienced their Tescos stopping stocking w/f, g/f and d/f sausages and fish fingers.
I went shopping this evening to my closest Tesco and they had none so drove to another Tesco's and was told there that they had stopped stocking them!!! AHHHHH!!!!! Its hard enough feeding my DD1 and DS3 without them taking away the little bit of ease on a busy night. Will have to go hunting now for other substitutes.
I know I'm sad but wanted to cry on my way home as my children will be so disappointed they can't have so much already.
Rant over now off to hunt internet.

have you tried your local butchers? ours does GF sausages

onepieceoflollipop · 18/03/2011 21:02

Couldn't find any specific frozen gf food in Tesco yesterday (and it is a biggish one.)

Thankfully the gf food is for dh so I just bought salmon steaks for him!

I find that Sainsburys have a much better range of free from, including frozen items.

A lot of M&S sausages are gf if you are able to get to an M&S (and similar price if not cheaper than the special free from Tesco ones)

Also some of the "posher" brands of chilled sausages are gf - Tesco often have Black Farmer for example.

Guadalupe · 18/03/2011 21:08

Co-op seem to have stopped their gf sausages too. I got some from the butcher today instead. He usually has some frozen ones.

hanreeoak · 18/03/2011 21:11

Thanks, unfortunately M&S and Sainsburys are miles away but will have to make a special trip and stock up I guess. I have tried the butchers sausages but DD1 does not like them as they are too much the proper meat (probably better for her), but the last time I went there they had stopped doing them too.

Thanks for the help, it just seems like their diets are a continuous stress and could really do without this.

If you have time I think it is fairly easy to make your own chicken nuggets (and probably fish fingers too)

LaWeasel · 18/03/2011 21:13

I was about to say, some local bnutchers definately do them - Musks and Powters both sell GF newmarket sausages online. Could do a bulk buy deal from a butcher and freeze them?

whatshouldicallmyself · 18/03/2011 21:14

what is g/f wf and hf?

onepieceoflollipop · 18/03/2011 21:15

gluten free, wheat free and dairy free. Not sure about hf?

Beamur · 18/03/2011 21:18

Are your kids ok with egg?
If so, it is easy to make your own fish fingers/nuggets etc - just dip in egg and coat with either g/f breadcrumbs/equivalent or use something like g/f unsweetened cereal crushed up.
I make fish fingers with my DD (not g/f tho) and she really enjoys helping and they take not much more time to make.
It is a pain though isn't it? A friend of mine has a son with a severe nut allergy and within the range of food he can eat, if a supplier then changes so that the item cannot be guaranteed nut free, its off the menu.

whatshouldicallmyself · 18/03/2011 21:21

Thanks

hanreeoak · 18/03/2011 21:45

Thanks Beamur, DD1 is ok with eggs DS3 is not, I have made my own fish fingers before its just so much easier to buy them. I make so much from scratch its just nice to buy a few things for ease or lazy days

The sainsburys chicken nuggets are actually very good. M & Shave just brought out a breaded chicken breast GF - I've not been yet but will be going - people who have had them have said they tasted good.

I batch cook chicken drumsticks in a GF coating and keep them in the freezer for lazy days too.....

pinkism · 19/03/2011 10:51

One of the main fishfinger makes do a Gf version, not got any in at the moment but its birds eye or similar x

DilysPrice · 19/03/2011 10:59

Helen Browning speedy sausages are gf, and cook in zero time flat - I think Sainsbos do them.
Annabel Karmel's chicken goujons in cornflakes are a great thing to make in bulk and freeze if you have the gf cornflakes (or can tolerate the small quantities of gluten in normal cornflakes). They do cook from frozen, (but I realise that's not helpful today when you have hungry DCs looking at you saying what's for supper mum?)

hanreeoak · 19/03/2011 22:13

Thanks, my mum managed to get some fish fingers today in sainsburys for me. Luckily she was going to homebase near there as its half hour drive away.

Thank you for all the suggestions on the sausages I have taken notes and will be hunting around.

As for Tescos, I have had a think about the childrens favourites and I think if i get organised I should be able to get them in Sainsburys so Menu for next two weeks has been planned and I am going to go on Tuesday. Hopefully if I plan ahead and get a big shop that will balance out the extra miles in petrol. Also there is an M&S near by i'm told so will go on a hunt. I'm going to try not to shop in Tescos again why should they get my hard earned cash when they dont give a s**t about people with allergies!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. Our Tescos stopped stocking them months ago and haven't started again, despite my requests. Our butcher does GF sausages but unfortunately they are laden with soy which dd cannot tolerate at all. I'm on the hunt locally too... Sainsbos is mega miles away.

auntevil · 21/03/2011 14:15

Tescos does stock a GF and dairy free sausage - but its not their own brand. Asda has the same brand. Apparently they are yummy - kids tell me as i'm veggie. The name is Debbie and Andrews Harrogate 97% pork sausages.

ashamedandconfused · 28/03/2011 11:29

I agree debbie and andrews sausages are nice but make sure you buy the right ones as some of theirs are not gf and wf

our tesco also sells Black Farmer gf sausages which are nice and youngs gfwf fish fingers, which i can also get in asda - i cant taste the difference between any of the gfwf fish fingers and "normal" ones

waitrose do a gf suasage too

personally i avoid ones from butchers as I am not sure they would clean down all the machinery properly in between different batches and cross contamination is a worry as DD very sensitive

ashamedandconfused · 28/03/2011 11:31

another tip - several things i cannot find in 2 nearby tesco stores (one of which is huge) I can get if i shop online, as it comes from a depot further away not one of the lcoal stores

ditto asda, small local store here but home deliveries come from 14 miles away where there is more choice of stock

HTH

pinkytheshrinky · 28/03/2011 11:34

The tesco gf sausages are shit anyway - fit for dogs only imho

seconding debbie and andrews and also jimmys farm too i think

Annoying about the fishfingers but i have taken to making them when cod is on offer as i save all my gf bread crusts (as it is so fecking expensive) and make loads for the freezer - much nicer anyway

FreudianSlippery · 28/03/2011 11:39

Oh bugger that's not good news. I have also heard that coeliacs may stop being entitled to food on prescription to save NHS funds, don't know if that's true though.

ashamedandconfused · 30/03/2011 14:29

FS - many PCTs are reviewing their prescription of GF foods, yes.
Many are implementing a strict adherence to a (stingy IMO) maximum amount of units per month and from a very very select list of products and brands.

hanreeoak · 01/04/2011 13:12

After my moan I went reluctantly to Tesco's this week and they had both sausages and fish fingers, and pizza, and sausage rolls and pastry!!!!!! Either my huge moan, the many complaint letters sent in or someone just saw some sense, I was happliy surprised. Also had pure soft dairy free cheese.
