Changeable dairy intolerance.

My dd has been dairy intolerant since birth. She can tolerate a small amount and this seems to change from week to week, and I never know whats going to tip her over into 'too much' and cause the squits.

We know she cannot eat cheese or drink normal milk, but she eats yoghurts etc. Some weeks she is fine and other weeks, with the same diet, she is squitty and crampy. Her appetite is good so I am not concerned its anything else, but anyone else have this problem??

My DS was also intolerant from birth.
I had to cut all dairy from my diet while I BF her.
You haven't said how old your DD is, but my DS grew out of his intolerance by the time he was a year old.
From then I was able to give him drinks of milk, yogurt etc.
I agree that the intolerance does change, but I avoided dairy altogether while he was small, so I wasn't really aware of it.

She's 6, and has always been the same. Its odd how it can change so much from week to week, month to month.

Ah, 6 is a different kettle of fish from my DS.
He grew out of his intolerance well before then.
I'm afraid I have no experience of such a long-lived case.

DD's intolerance changes if she has a stomach bug, but otherwise she now seems to be OK. A friend's DD has a longer lasting intolerance. My friend has found that she can tolerate yogurt but not fromage frais and she can tolerate hard cheese but not soft cheese.

stupid question, but are you SURE it's dairy? it seems odd that it would change so much.... hmm

NorthernGobshite · 15/03/2011 19:15

I am sure its dairy, because when she gets shitty, we cut out dairy for couple of days and she's back to normal in no time....its tiresome for her as we never kow what or how much will trigger it off and obviously children like things with dairy in! ('e ice cream, yoghurts etc)

45 years old and can still get caught out with the too much dairy problem.
I use the rule of thumb that if i have any dairy at lunch, i don't at dinner. It's often the lactose part of dairy that causes the ups and downs. If you produce some lactase to break down the lactose, pushing yourself over the lactose limit can be explosive.
Hard cheese - cheddar, parmesan etc, has negligible amounts of lactose as it is broken down by the fermentation process.
If you produce no lactose, then it will always cause problems.
I also have IBS, so bouts can come and go with stress (both happy and sad events), time of month, eating at the wrong time, not eating small regular meals etc etc.

How about changing to goats/ sheep cheese and soya yougurt (if she's 6 st helen's farm stuff is mild and relatively cheddar like).

My dd has in the past been able to tolerate small amount but now she is back to intolerance (no obvious pattern ). So we have returned to dairy free.
