Rash around mouth in weaning baby

Just starting to wean my 6 month old and had no problems till today I gave her homous and breadsticks and around her mouth became red and swollen. Has taken a couple of hours to go down. Is this the sign of an allegy or common when introducing new foods? Are there any common allergens in homous? She has had toast no problem so assume it wasn't the bread stick.

Sesame, very common allergen found in tahini paste, in hummus.

Also, less common (but increasingly more-so,) is chickpea, a member of the legume family and related to peanut. But most likely sesame. Ask your GP to refer you for allergy testing, and in the mean time buy some piriton!

agree with nellymoo about the sesame in houmous, also strawberries are supposed to bring out rashes easier than other foods, these foods are both fine for my baby but yoghurts bring him out in a rash

We have a family history of atopic disease so I held off introducing these high allergy food until 10 months, just to be on the safe side. It's not like the baby is thinking " oh no everyone else is having pasta, fish and tomatoes and im stuck with sweet potatoes and pears"Grin

We don't have any family history of allergies, not food allergies anyway. I remember dd1 having a similar reaction to strawberries but it was short lived. It'll be really annoying if she is allergic as homous is a bit of a go-to food for us.

Thanks for the replies anyway.

I'm not an expert but I think that other allergies like asthma and hay fever ARE relevant, it does t have to be allergies to food

I would be concerned that her Mouth became swollen, that's worse than a rash or redness. I would mention it to be the

So do you think I should call the gp after just this one incidence? Or try her with homous again and see if it happens again?

Btw it wasn't swollen as in constricting her airways, I meant more that it was raised and red.

GP and ask for allergist referral. I'd avoid humous (and other sesame products) in the meantime. If anything like this happens again, take a photo of the rash. XX

Not necessarily a full blown allergy, could just be a food sensitivity. They often grow out of those, for example my DS came out in hives when I gave him blueberries at 6 months. We held off them until a year and now he is fine. Also tomatoes used to give him a reddish rash around his mouth which just seemed to be a contact reaction - a little bit of vaseline beforehand helped with this.

I would urge caution with food that cause this type of reaction until at least a year, reintroduce them carefully. Any signs of discomfort/swelling in the mouth then definitely refer to a doctor.

KristinaM · 16/03/2011 13:07

Oops I mean mention it to your gp

KristinaM · 16/03/2011 13:09

I agree, our Dd got red rash around her mouth with tomatoes when she was a toddler, but she grew out of it and seems to have no sensitivities or intoleramces to food now

nellymoo · 16/03/2011 21:56

Yes, call the GP and ask to be referred to an allergy specialist. Don't give her hummus again "just to see" as subsequent reactions can be more severe. Sesame is a very common allergen, and often goes hand-in-hand with other food allergies, especially nuts.

It may not have constricted her airways this time, but now she has been sensitised, the next reaction could be much worse. I don't mean to frighten you, but you really should take this seriously.

harverina · 18/03/2011 12:59

I have been advised that often it is the second exposure to an allergen that can cause a more sever allergic reaction, so i personally would not try the houmous again until you gave seen your gp. My dd took a bad reaction to milk at 6 months old and it was the paramedics who told me this.
