Tummy bug? teething? or allergy to new food?

I know that none of you can tell me for sure, but I wondered if anybody recognises this as a delayed allergic reaction?

DS2 just turned 1 on tues so now it's time to introduce the allergens which I have held off on up until now.

DS1 had an egg allergy which he has thankfully outgrown and almost everyone in our family has allergies or other atopic stuff going on, so quite a family history.

So, I gave him a little bit of birthday cake on tuesday which he ate fine. I know that the first exposure doesn't cause a reaction, but at least I knew he'd now been exposed.

On Thursday, I gave him scrambled egg. I know, I know, I probably should have given him something else with well cooked egg, but I didn't. I did put scrambled egg on his skin first but there was no reaction so I let him eat a whole load of the stuff.

No immediate reaction, but I thought we should wait a few days and then try him again before declaring that he was ok on egg.

But, today, he has been girny and miserable (he's always smiley and it takes a lot for him to cry) and has done progressively looser nappies, and now they are quite explosive with very stringy looking stuff in them.

He's had really bad nappy rash for the last few days, and after the last explosion, his bum looked very red with what looked like the little white allergic bumps, the name of which I forget.

I've given him piriton and calpol and now he seems much better.

Could it really take this long for a reaction (36hrs)? Or is it something else? Poor ds2, I feel like I should have been more cautious than just let him shovel the eggs in Sad

I can't believe I'm reading this! I had exactly the same kind of reaction with DS. He had just been diagnosed with a wheat intolerance/allergy (they can't decide) and because there was less things he could eat when we were out I started letting him have ham, egg and chips when we went to restaurants (ok wetherspoons....) He's never liked egg before so I never gave it to him. But exactly the same thing happened, although it was more like 24 hours. The sore bum and little white bumps, you mean hives right? That's exactly what DS had and I've had such trouble convincing anyone they actually were hives, because nobody else saw them.

I'm so glad someone else has had the same thing (although of course I'm not glad your DS2 is poorly and potentially allergic to eggs)
I started to exclude eggs as well as wheat and interestingly enough his asthma cleared up, although at the time I thought we just had it well controlled. The paediatrician still maintained it was an intolerance and said that even if they did an allergy test, it would come back neg because he'd not eaten egg or wheat for so long, there would be no antibodies in his blood.

What sort of symptoms did DS1 if you don't mind me asking??

It does sound similar, doesn't it. I don't mean hives, but the little bumps that look a bit like bites, I'm sure it begins with a U. Ach, I'll have to look it up now, that's annoying me!!

DS1? Well, because his cousin also had an egg allergy, I kept him off eggs til age 1 as well, but he must have had previous exposure because he reacted to the tiny crumb of birthday cake that I gave him on his birthday. It was a small reaction, just with a bit of a rash and the same bumps that I think begin with U Grin. Then, his next couple of exposures were accidentally when I touched him with mayo on my fingers and his skin came up in hives. He never actually ingested egg again until we did egg challenges at the hospital, so I have no idea what would have happened if he would have eaten it. I would guess from the level of his allergy (as per his RAST test) that he would at the every least have been sick/runny poo and possibly rashes or maybe anaphylaxis. Luckily we never found out!!

Urticaria is the medical name, but hives is another name for them! Grin
I don't think Ds has a problem with contact allergy although he's never touched egg tbh and I suppose if he gets hives on his bum after ahem pooing it out, then technically thats from contact right?? I might go back to the doctor and ask them to test him then.
What I'm wondering is if an egg allergy can cause digestive symptoms as well as asthma and skin problems then? I was always under the impression anything digestive was an intolerance and asthma/eczema was allergic. Its all so confusing and the people who are supposed to know about this stuff (docs and the like) are never as helpful as they should be, in my experience anyway.

Hmm, am still a bit confused by the hives/urticaria thing. On ds1's first reaction, he had individual lumps that were white in the middle and red around the outside and rounded on the top. The type of reaction they get from a skin test.

But, the time he got touched by mayo, he got probably a couple of dozen tiny pointed little spot things within an area the size of my thumbprint.

Definitely different reactions, so am not sure of the names. Doesn't really matter anyway!

You should ask for a referral to the allergy consultant. An allergy is a different response by the body compared to an intolerence, but both can result in vomitting and loose stools, amongst other things.

Oh ok, DS spots on his bum were defo hives/urticaria. They were almost like weals (that is a word right? Or have I just made that up?) But I think I know what the other spots are because he gets them round his mouth after eating tomatoes, they almost look like teenage spots but without a head?
I'll defo go back to the paediatrician then, I know one of his collegues has an allergy clinic at Evelina in London, so will hopefully get referred there.
Hope you get DS2's problem sorted too Smile

Just wanted to report that ds2 is much better now. He was really miserable for a couple of days and his bum was in a right state.

His poo yesterday was heading back towards normal and his nappy rash has cleared up. This all ties in with the egg allergy theory I think, getting better once the egg leaves his system.

I will try some raw egg on his skin next week. I fully expect a reaction. Then I will head to the doc to ask for a referal to the allergy clinic.

At least I know how to handle egg free from previous experience though.
