could DS eczema and other symtoms be allergy related?

Hi there, we have had quite a rough 5 weeks or so and now returning to work has made me question things more.5mo DS has eczema that seems to have got more severe over this period and is awful once put to bed at night. Once in bed will settle initially then constantly waking, crying & irritable. He used to go 7-11 then 11-7 only waking now and again needing to be re-settled. He also seems to be passing wind lots and drawing his knees up. (DS is formula fed - aptimil first)

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Do you think it could be an allergy/intolerence?

Any ideas greatly appreciated, the sleep deprivation is getting to me :(

DS at 4 months displayed eczema like flaky skin all over his face for about a month. He was EBF then. It turned out to be allergic to Johnsons and other such products. Lovely HV told me about Aveeno cream (not lotion) which you could get on prescription, and everything disappeared without trace in a week. I would really urge you to try it. HV also asked me to bathe DS with Aqueous cream (shampoo and bath) which I still do (DS is 9mo now). He is still allergic to Johnsons. I have recently used Weleda from Waitrose to bathe him. Apparently just water is what the HV wishes people would use and then Aveeno straight after if baby has dry skin.

Hi
Sounds like my DD, she is 13m now and her eczema/digestive problems have reduced massively after we were finally referred to dermatologist and she started a dairy free diet and very strong steroid cream and daily strong anti-histamine. She rarely needs the steroid cream now. And we are getting some sleep! It was very very hard for a while - no sleep, constant scratching, just generally unhappy. Just find a nice GP and keep going back if things aren't right until you get a referral. Good luck Smile

Thanks mamattoo, we aren't using any lotions or potions except an emollient prescribed so I don't think that could be making it worse (I hope)

Potatoes, thanks for replying, were your sleep problems very bad? once you started dairy free did it take quite a while for things to improve?

Thanks for the advice :)

Emolliants can make eczema worse I am afraid. You may have to try a few before you find one that suits.

My DS has severe eczema and it is allergy related but food is not an issue.

He is allergic to house dust mites, pollens and dog/cat dander.

We didnt find this out till he was about 5 though. We use the usual topical treatments but I also have quite a strict housework regime. I find this helps most of all but I wouldnt suggest it until you were sure of the causes of your DS's condition (unless you really like hoovering and dusting Smile)

You really need to see a dermatologist before you will get any proper answers.

My ds reacted to an emollient cream and dairy (and grapefruit!!!), once we sorted out those we have never looked back. He can have dairy and needs no creams.

He looked very infectious at his worse and Mum's would shy away from him picking up their babies :(
