Is this an allergic reaction to peanuts? Will it stay?

For the second time in a row I've eaten peanut butter and my mouth has immediately started tingling. My throat feels like someone's taken a cheese grater to it. My lips itch and my gums throb. It goes away after a while. Is this what an allergy or intolerance feels like then? I've eaten lots of peanut butter before (a shedload when pregnant), never had any problems. Been eating a lot of nuts lately.

Should I stop with the peanuts and nuts in case it makes things worse? Can a reaction like this be temporary, or is it here to stay now?

Thanks. Sorry if my questions are stupid. I've never had an allergic reaction to anything before, don't know anything about it.

I had something like that once.
Went and got tested. The GP and hospital doc worried that what follows will be an allergic reaction where your throat swells in a way that impedes your airway- and that is serious. I was told not to eat nuts. Unfortunately, as I had just had a snickers bar on the way to the appointment (absent mindedly) I felt able to ignore this advice, and I have had very few similar episodes since. In fact, none at all in recent years.
I am probably not a good person to talk to though. A sensible person would avoid nuts and go to your GP.

Thanks. I'll talk to GP about it then. Don't know whether I'm being paranoid now, but I've been feeling dizzy all evening and my stomach hurts. Last time I felt the same. At the time I didn't make the peanut butter connection, just thought it was a virus. But it's exactly the same pain and feeling this time round so I think it's connected.
Domesticslattern, do you still eat peanuts now then?

in the meantime, get some antihistamines and have them handy...do you still have the symptoms?

ifaistos · 03/03/2011 21:05

Still got stomach pain and a bit dizzy but mouth isn't itchy anymore

if your mouth is OK and you aren't wheezing you are probably OK but if it was me I'd still take an anti histamine and def go to gp tomoro

Ok thanks for replies everyone. After reading your posts I've done some googling and have convinced myself I do need to see the GP - not normally very good at going to the doctor when I should.
